The etymology of the word is qaram, from the Arabic word love and Somalis use it to describe the oldest modern musical composition of Somaliland, mainly from the 1940s to the mid-1960s. The word Qaraami became synonymous with "old-time good music", or for young people simply "old-time music". Qaraami can be classified for Somali culture as classical music is in the Western world, and for modern Somali literature, the Qaraami era remains an extraordinary period, in which musical production, rooted in typical traditional pastoral folk dance, blends with the effects of urbanization in cities. The melodies produced in that era of classical works are those that have stood the test of time and underlined the fundamental foundations of modern Somali song production, in other words, Qaraami songs must be classified as classical. Includes the first ever transcribed musical notations for Qaraami melodies: Beerdillaacshe, Carwo, Murug, Nugul and Aroor.

State Building and National Identity Reconstruction in the Horn of Africa

This book examines post-secession and post-transition state building in Somaliland, Somalia, South Sudan and Sudan. It explores two intimately linked, yet analytically distinct themes: state building and national identity reconstruction following secession and collapse. In Somaliland and South Sudan, rearranging the state requires a complete metamorphosis of state institutions so that they respond to the needs and interests of the people. In Sudan and Somalia, the reconfiguration of the remains of the state must address a new reality and demands on the ground. All four cases examined, although highly variable, involve conflict. Conflict defines the scope, depth and momentum of the state building and state reconstruction process. It also determines the contours and parameters of the projects to reconstitute national identity and rebuild a nation. Addressing the contested identity formation and its direct relation to state building would therefore go a long way in mitigating conflicts and state crisis.

Maxamed Xaashi Dhamac Gaarriye

Maxamed Xaashi Dhamac “Gaarriye” (1951-2012) was a well-known Somali speaking contemporary poet. Originally from Hargeysa, Somaliland he was among many of his contemporaries living in Mogadishu in the 1970s, and whose works are credited with having great influence upon the prevalent sociopolitical situation in the country today. Thoughy largely motivated and moved by patriotic sentiments they were also sympathetic to the leftist political movements which were internationally popular in that era. Many themes such as an indefatigable advocacy of human rights, freedom of thought and expression, and a vehement hatred of all forms of human degradation were so brilliantly articulated in his poetry. In this volume, alongside biography material, is a selection of some of Gaarriye's most lauded poetry, such as his master pieces on ‘Nuclear Weapons’, ‘Nelson Mandela’, ‘Watergate’ and ‘Zimbabwe’. This book is the fifth in the “Iswaydaarsi” (Exchange) series which aspires to translate Somali literature and wisdom into other languages, and at the same time providing specific knowledge of international classical literature to the Somali speaking readership.

Papers from the Linguistics Workshop

The articles in this book are the result of the First Linguistics Workshop: Somali Language and Literature at the Hargeysa Cultural Centre in December 2015. The objective of the workshop was to facilitate the sharing of current work among scholars in the field of Somali language studies through presentation of their ongoing projects. This also allowed current work to be opened to a wider audience and for students, journalists and writers to hear about some of the issues which are of current interest in Somali language studies. There was a deliberate attempt to draw people engaged in both more strictly linguistic matters together with those whose interests are more as practitioners with langu...
