Attack on the 'Idea of India'
In 2014, India reposed high hopes in Prime Minister Modi - to deliver 'New India' of plentiful jobs, double-digit growth and corruption-free efficient governance. A decade later, those hopes stand belied. Instead, relentless and multi-pronged attacks are underway to bring 'transformative' changes to the very 'idea of India' - a modern liberal democracy which its founding fathers envisioned, strived to establish and which its Constitution embodies. The changes are aimed at installing a different idea of India- a Hindu majoritarian one which is exclusionary, discriminatory and hate-and-violence-filled. At one level, this book flags the myriad ways in which such attacks have been mounted, the elements and factors that are aiding it; at another, it gives a reality cheektooth long list of lofty claims, including ushering in the "Amrit Kaal". What is obvious is that none of these changes is making India better or brighter in anyway.

Cities and Public Policy
The twenty-first century will witness a rapid urban expansion in the developing world. India, it is believed, will be at the forefront of such a phenomenon. This book acknowledges the role of agglomeration externalities as the cornerstone of urban public policy in India. Arguing that hypotheses of over-urbanization and urban bias theory--which articulated a negative view of urbanization--are based on fragile theoretical as well as empirical foundations, this book calls for proactive public policy to harness planned urbanization as resource. India requires agglomeration-augmenting, congestion-mitigating, and resource-generating cities as engines of economic growth, including rural development. Progress in Photosynthesis Research
These Proceedings comprise the majority of the scientific contributions that were presented at the VIIth International Congress on Photosynthesis. The Congress was held August 10-15 1986 in Providence, Rhode Island, USA on the campus of Brown University, and was the first in the series to be held on the North American continent. Despite the greater average travel distances involved the Congress was attended by over 1000 active participants of whom 25% were registered students. This was gratifying and indicated that photosynthesis will be well served by excellent young scientists in the future. As was the case for the VIth International Congress held in Brussels, articles for these Proceedings were delivered camera ready to expedite rapid publication. In editing the volumes it was interesting to reflect on the impact that the recent advances in structure and molecular biology had in this Congress. It is clear that cognizance of structure and molecular genetics will be even more necessary in the design of experiments and the direction of future research.
