Engineering Design Synthesis

This book brings together some of the most influential pieces of research undertaken around the world in design synthesis. It is the first comprehensive work of this kind and covers all three aspects of research in design synthesis: - understanding what constitutes and influences synthesis; - the major approaches to synthesis; - the diverse range of tools that are created to support this crucial design task. With its range of tools and methods covered, it is an ideal introduction to design synthesis for those intending to research in this area as well as being a valuable source of ideas for educators and practitioners of engineering design.

The New Jersey Churchscape

The New Jersey Churchscape

Although best known as the Garden State, New Jersey could also be called the Church State. The state boasts thousands of houses of worship, with more than one thousand still standing that were built in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Frank L. Greenagel has photographed more than six hundred. He has selected two hundred of these historic landmarks for an examination of why they are sited where they are and why they look the way they do. Greenagel has sought out and included images of not only mainstream Christian churches, but also Jewish synagogues as well as the places of worship of religious groups such as the Moravians, the Church of the Brethren, and the Seventh Day Baptists. The photographs are arranged chronologically within sections on three major early settlement regions of the state ¾ the Hudson River, the Delaware River, and the Raritan Valley. For each building, Greenagel details the date of construction, the cultural, historic, and religious influences that shaped it, the architectural details that distinguish it, and what purpose it currently serves.

Baer *-Rings

A systematic exposition of Baer *-Rings, with emphasis on the ring-theoretic and lattice-theoretic foundations of von Neumann algebras. Equivalence of projections, decompositio into types; connections with AW*-algebras, *-regular rings, continuous geometries. Special topics include the theory of finite Baer *-rings (dimension theory, reduction theory, embedding in *-regular rings) and matrix rings over Baer *-rings. Written to be used as a textbook as well as a reference, the book includes more than 400 exercises, accompanied by notes, hints, and references to the literature. Errata and comments from the author have been added at the end of the present reprint (2nd printing 2010).

From Quarks to Quasars

In the history of science, only three hundred years separate the discoveries of Galileo and Albert Einstein. Recent science has brought us relativity theory, quantum mechanics, and elementary particle physics-in a radical and mercurial departure from earlier developments. In this collection of essays, four philosophers and one physicist consider the interactions of mathematics and physics with logic and philosophy in the rapidly changing environment of modern science.
