Why Don't We Kiss!?

Decision theory renders the human decision maker the centre of attention: observing, describing how he makes decisions and leading him by the hand in an attempt to prevent him from taking `illogical' decisions. Literature and scientific publications on decision theory should be accessible and understandable to the average decision maker but this is almost never the case since these methods and models are too complex and/or require input from the decision maker which makes him feel uncomfortable. The result is that most decision makers turn their back on scientific approaches and prefer to use common sense and `rules of thumb' when facing decision problems. To breach the current wide gap between decision makers and academic researchers a clear idea as to what a human decision maker is and is not capable of is needed. Based on these elements less sophisticated models need to be build. In this book, a KISS-principle is proposed and several methods in the field of decision making by one decision maker or by group, resulting from close contacts with real world decision makers, are presented. Field cases are used to illustrate the methods and a lot of application fields are presented.

The IWRM concept was established as an international guiding water management paradigm in the early 1990ies and has become a vital approach to solving the problems associated with the topic of water. The book summarizes fourteen comprehensive IWRM research projects with worldwide coverage and analyses their motivations, settings, approaches and implementation of results. Aiming to be an up-to-date interdisciplinary scientific reference, this book provides a comprehensive theoretical and empirical analysis of contemporary IWRM research, examples of science based implementations and a synthesis of the lessons learnt. It concludes with some major future challenges, the solving of which will further strengthen the IWRM concept.

Perception of English

There has been a significant increase in the number of English speakers globally, with the majority of them being non-native speakers who rely on diverse varieties of the language. Throughout its history, English has been disseminated through a number of processes, ranging from colonialism to globalisation. This has ultimately resulted in the formation of various relationships between English and target communities. English has also spread to countries where Muslims constitute the majority of the population. As religious teachings are embedded in local or national cultures, and thus result in non-homogeneous Islamic communities across the globe, it is a frequently used oversimplification to ...

A Literary mirror is the first English-language work to comprehensively analyse Indonesian-language literature from Bali from a literary and cultural viewpoint. It covers the period from 1920 to 2000. This is an extremely rich field for research into the ways Balinese view their culture and how they respond to external cultural forces. This work complements the large number of existing studies of Bali and its history, anthropology, traditional literature, and the performing arts. A Literary Mirror is an invaluable resource for those researching twentieth-century Balinese authors who wrote in Indonesian. Until now, such writers have received very little attention in the existing literature. An appendix gives short biographical details of many significant writers and lists their work.
