The Limits of Bodily Integrity
This volume argues that legislation on abortion, adultery, and rape has been central to the formation of the modern citizen. The author draws on rights literature, bio-political scholarship, and a gender-studies perspective as a foundation for rethinking the sovereign relationship. In approaching the politicization of reproductive space from this direction, the study resituates the role of rights and rights-granting within the sovereign relationship. A second theme running throughout the book explores the international implications of these arguments and addresses the role of abortion, adultery and rape legislation in constructing 'civilizational' relationships. In focusing on the Ottoman Empire, Turkey, France and Italy as case studies, Miller presents a discussion of what 'Europe' is, and the role of sexuality and reproduction in defining it.
Family Planning in the Legacy of Islam
How has the Islamic view of marriage, family formation and child rearing developed and adapted over the centuries? Is contraception just permitted or actively encouraged? The family is the basic social unit of Islamic society. Even without compelling population pressures, there has been concern with spacing and family planning. This book is the result of a massive research project, gathering fourteen centuries (the seventh to the twentieth) of views on family formation and planning, as expressed by leading Islamic theologians and jurists. The work has been discussed and shaped at each stage by a committee of Islamic experts representing the majority of the Muslim countries. The book provides a much needed source of reference and will be of equal value and interest to professionals in health care and development work and to those working in the academic disciplines of Middle East studies, religion and population studies.

Gercüş, cumhuriyetin kuruluşundan bu yana beşerî, sosyal, ekonomik ve iktisadî durumunu büyük oranda muhafaza eden, diğer bir deyişle gelişmişlik düzeyi açısından durağan bir ilçedir. Elbette bu durağanlığın nedenleri sadece Gercüş ve Gercüş insanından kaynaklanmaz. Dış etkenlerden dolayı gelişememek, bir tercih değil zorlayıcılardan kaynaklanan bir sonuç olarak yorumlanabilir. İlçede gelişmişlik düzeyinin ve üretimin durağan seyretmesi, ilçe üzerine yapılan kültürel ve akademik çalışmaların azlığı ile benzerlik gösterir. Gercüş hakkında yapılan araştırmaların sayısı yok denecek kadar azdır. Öyle ki eldeki kitabın hazırlanması sürecinde, hemen hemen her yazar araştırmacı, yazılı kaynak ve malzeme bulamamaktan yakınmış ve çalışmalarını hazırlarken ulaşabildikleri her bilgiyi hassasiyetle değerlendirmiştir.
