Systems of innovation that are conducted within national borders can preserve inefficient solutions and prevent development. This has led to a feeling that transnational learning strategies are more and more desirable. In practice, the field of transnational learning has been dominated by various policy-making institutions, such as the OECD and European Union, working through different types of policy instruments and programs such as structural funds, open methods of coordination, as well as international research institutions and networks set up by cooperating national governments working on comparative analysis, benchmarking and indicators. This book lays out a set of methods which can further enhance the experience of transnational learning, starting from the sociological ideas promoted by Charles Sabel of learning through monitoring, and by Marie Laure Djelic and others of the “translation” of experiences between different countries. Case studies and examples are collected from three fields: industrial development, tourism and local government.

Hormonal Proteins and Peptides: Techniques in Protein Chemistry, Volume IX presents the various methods in protein chemistry and discusses their use for hormonal protein investigations. This book examines the approach to investigating biologically active peptides, which is based on a combination of chromatographic and fluorometric procedures. Organized into five chapters, this volume starts with an overview of the fluorometric methods for analysis of peptides and proteins with focus on their use in high performance liquid chromatography. This text then presents a thorough discussion on partition chromatography of proteins and peptides. Other chapters consider a comprehensive account of absorption and fluorescence techniques for the structural analysis of proteins. This book presents as well a comprehensive discussion on optical rotatory dispersion and circular dichroism methods and their application for the study of protein conformation. The final chapter deals with the historical aspects of fetuin and ultracentrifuge. This book is a valuable resource for chemists, biologists, endocrinologists, and physicians.

Evaluating the European Approach to Rural Development

The LEADER programme, initiated in 1991, aims to improve the development potential of rural areas in the European Union by drawing on local initiatives and skills. Highlighting this unique policy approach, this book presents up-to-date research results on LEADER’s achievements and restrictions at the local level in a comparative way in order to discuss its merits and problems. What makes LEADER important is not only that it has a major role in rural development efforts, but also that it has a pioneering role in the new type of governance, participatory democracy. Asking whether LEADER strengthens local democracy or not, this book also looks at how it affects the power balance among stakeholders, between national and local actors and between genders. It questions whether LEADER projects are genuinely grass-root level activities, reflecting local needs and ideals; and if the approach brings local know-how back onto the development agenda in innovations and development activities. Finally, the authors examine the success of dissemination of knowledge within the LEADER programme to other regions.

In the past 10 years, contemporary geneticists using new molecular tools have been able to resolve complex traits into individual genetic components and describe each such component in detail. Molecular Dissection of Complex Traits summarizes the state of the art in molecular analysis of complex traits (QTL mapping), placing new developments in thi
