This volume compiles the latest research on learning and teaching Polish as a foreign and second language among Ukrainian migrants and refugees. The authors address the growing necessity for developing both theoretical frameworks and practical solutions to facilitate efficient language acquisition and acculturation amidst the unprecedented inflow of migrants resulting from the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. The research presented in this volume marks an important initial step in recognizing and analyzing the diverse needs of individuals with migrant and refugee experiences. Furthermore, it offers new perspectives that pave the way for future advancements in the field of Polish language education.
The aim of the volume is to focus on research interests that are rarely presented in the literature on the subject and that arise from the currently perceived needs of the developing didactics of Polish as a foreign language. The research results presented in the contributions provide a new look at the process of acquiring and/or teaching/learning Polish from the following aspects: the peculiarities of Ukrainian speakers learning Polish; problems of acquiring Polish by students from Japan, China, France and Lebanon, methods of developing language skills and activities, and specific phenomena in teaching Polish as a business language. Qualitative, quantitative, and mixed analyses, as well as experimental corpora, allow the results described to be considered important for the developing discipline.
Many countries in Asia are inhabited by multi-segment societies diversified in terms of race, religion, language and economic status. They have repeatedly provided the basis for analysis of the search for consensus in the construction of a political scene that would ensure the participation in power of each group. Regardless of the chosen model, the distribution of power in multi-segment societies has always been characterized by a state of "unstable equilibrium". Practical solutions constantly evolved between consociationalism, centripetalism, federalism. In extreme cases they led to political disintegration of states or to permanent domination of one of the segments, most often based on authoritarian solutions. In this volume, a group of scholars specializing in countries of the region try to point out the dynamics of the "unstable equilibrium" of power sharing in particular Asian countries and analyze the trends occurring in them in the 21st century.

The contributors attempt to describe Polish rivers and lakes as a nexus of narratives about nature culture, pointing out those elements of the story around which scientific, political, media, social and ecological narratives are created. All of them influence the shape of reflection on the water ecosystem and its function in Polish education. The authors recreate old and contemporary Polish mythmaking narratives about Polish rivers and lakes and, by proposing a critical reading of them, try to develop new educational practices that would take into account the 21st century conditions related to the climate catastrophe. The context related to the crisis also opens up thinking about rivers to other categories (cooperation, solidarity, activism) than those that have been applicable in Polish education so far (national symbolism, utility).
This book aims at investigating discourse phenomena (i.e., linguistic elements and constructions that help to manage the organization, flow, and outcome of communication) from a typological and cross-linguistic perspective. Although it is a well-established idea in functional-typological approaches that grammar is shaped by discourse use, systematic typological cross-linguistic investigations on discourse phenomena are relatively rare. This volume aims at bridging this gap, by integrating different linguistic subfields, such as discourse analysis, pragmatics, and typology. The contributions, both theoretically and empirically oriented, focus on a broad variety of discourse phenomena (ranging from discourse markers to discourse function of grammatical markers, to strategies that manage the discourse and information flow) while adopting a typological perspective and considering typologically distant languages.
