La cultura a la Universitat de València
Des d’època isabelina, el món estudiantil ha intentat organitzar-se per satisfer les inquietuds intel·lectuals que hi havia més enllà de les aules i arran d’aquesta voluntat s’han produït, amb més o menys intensitat en funció dels contextos, moltíssimes activitats culturals –des de conferències a representacions teatrals, passant per debats, publicacions periòdiques... Al seu torn, l’Estudi General s’ha maldat per impulsar i estendre la cultura més enllà de l’àmbit estrictament universitari, al servei de la ciutadania, sobretot des de principis del segle XX. Aquest text fa un recorregut, des de mitjan segle XIX fins a la creació del Vicerectorat de Cultura i Esport (1985), per la història de l’activitat cultural de la Universitat de València, que, després de la docència i la recerca, constitueix la seua tercera missió, una dimensió de la vida universitària plena d’interès i encara poc coneguda.

La creació de l’Estudi General de València a inciativa del Consell de la ciutat confirmava les aspiracions d’una societat urbana que podia comptar-se entre les més avançades de l’Europa de la fi del segle XV. Seguint el model de Bolonya, Salamanca i París, els jurats i consellers de València redactaren els capítols que haurien de regir la vida de la nova institució.

Beyond Public Engagement
University collections have unquestionably played a central role in the production of knowledge. They are valuable resources for studying the construction of traditions and identities, proving particularly interesting for understanding how universities have shaped societies. Furthermore, they have also been mobilised as cultural mediators to legitimise academic institutions and bring the results of their activities into the public sphere. A partir d’una exhaustiva recopilació de fonts documentals –sobretot, de notícies de premsa des de mitjan segle XIX fins a l’actualitat– analitzem la sorprenent història, antiga i recent, de l’edifici de més plasticitat i projecció sociocultural de la capital del Túria, que anomenem la Plaça de València atenent els seus múltiples usos, l’impacte i l’obertura al conjunt de la ciutadania en tots els temps.
