Liberal Education and the Small University in Canada
Small liberal arts institutions that focus on the undergraduate student have received little attention in the literature on higher education in Canada. In this collection of essays contributors set out to redress the situation. Focusing on Mount Allison University in New Brunswick they question, among other things, whether the values and integrity of liberal arts teaching are being preserved and make a case for the important role liberal education at the small university plays in higher education in Canada.

Despite decades of efforts to combat homelessness, many people continue to experience it in Canada’s major cities. There are a number of barriers that prevent effective responses to homelessness, including a lack of agreement on the fundamental question: what is homelessness? In Multiple Barriers, Alison Smith explores the forces that shape intergovernmental and multilevel governance dynamics to help better understand why, despite the best efforts of community and advocacy groups, homelessness remains as persistent as ever. Drawing on nearly 100 interviews with key actors in Vancouver, Calgary, Toronto, and Montreal, as well as extensive participant observation, Smith argues that institutional differences across cities interact with ideas regarding homelessness to contribute to very different models of governance. Multiple Barriers shows that the genuine involvement of locally based service providers, with the development of policy, are necessary for an effective, equitable, and enduring solution to the homelessness crisis in Canada.

Roasting Chestnuts: The Mythology of Maritime Political Culture is a book about outdated political stereotypes. The Maritime provinces of New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, and Nova Scotia are often regarded as pre-modern hinterland in which corrupt practices and traditional loyalties continue to predominate. While this depiction of Maritime political life may, at one time, have been largely accurate, this is no longer the case. Employing a variety of indicators, this book argues that a new set of political images is needed to capture Maritime political reality today. What emerges from the analysis is a picture of Maritime politics which no longer differs markedly from that which exists in the rest of Canada.

The writings of these six women from varied backgrounds reflect their different experiences of life in the late nineteenth century. In this study a biographical profile of each author, set in the contemporary social context, is provided, as well as an analysis of career development, emphasising publishing history and critical response. As each case history unfolds, the broader picture emerges of an era when many ideas of personal and public life were changing.
