Bone metastasis in the milieu of Osteoimmunology

Bone metastases are common in many cancers and associated with skeletal-related events such as spinal cord compression, fractures, pain, disability, and impaired quality of life. Bone metastasis is most prominent in breast, prostate, and lung cancer patients and is the leading cause of cancer-associated death. Osteoblasts and osteoclasts control each other’s functions to maintain normal bone homeostasis. In addition, bone remodeling is governed by the balanced activity of the bone and immune cells. Bone metastasis is a multistage process, and the bone microenvironment influences the seeding and colonization of the disseminated cancer cells. Disruption of bone homeostasis and immune population provides fertile soil to facilitate cancer cell seeding. Despite the advancement of our understanding to treat primary tumors, most of the treatments for bone metastasis are palliative. Proper understanding of the immune component of the bone and their involvement in bone metastasis niche formation will help to explore future directions of bone metastasis research.

Unbound Feet

The crippling custom of footbinding is the thematic touchstone for Judy Yung's engrossing study of Chinese American women during the first half of the twentieth century. Using this symbol of subjugation to examine social change in the lives of these women, she shows the stages of "unbinding" that occurred in the decades between the turn of the century and the end of World War II. The setting for this captivating history is San Francisco, which had the largest Chinese population in the United States. Yung, a second-generation Chinese American born and raised in San Francisco, uses an impressive range of sources to tell her story. Oral history interviews, previously unknown autobiographies, bo...

Wang Renmei

Wang Renmei was on a fast track to become one of China’s leading film stars in the 1930s. Her early films were received with magnificent praise by audiences and critics alike, though she later lamented that she became famous too early and never had a chance to properly study acting. The film Song of the Fishermen in which she sang and played a major role was the first Chinese motion picture to win an International Award in Moscow in 1935. Wang’s personal struggles reflected the turbulent period from the end of the Qing dynasty to the rise of Deng Xiaoping. This study explores her artistic achievements amid the prevalent anti-feminist and feudal society in China prior to the founding of t...
