Chaos in Atomic Physics

This book provides a coherent introduction to the manifestations of chaos in atoms and molecules.

Transient Chaos

The aim of this Book is to give an overview, based on the results of nearly three decades of intensive research, of transient chaos. One belief that motivates us to write this book is that, transient chaos may not have been appreciated even within the nonlinear-science community, let alone other scientific disciplines.

Quantum Dynamics of Simple Systems

The present level of experimental sophistication in quantum physics allows physicists to explore domains unimaginable just a decade ago and to test the most fundamental laws of quantum mechanics. This has led to renewed interest in devising new tests, experiments, and devices where it is possible to observe the interaction and localization of just a few atoms or photons. These techniques have been used to reveal new nonclassical effects, to question the limit of the principle of correspondence, and to force quantum behavior in semiconductors. With contributions from leading experts in quantum systems, Quantum Dynamics of Simple Systems provides an overview of the present range of quantum dynamics, exploring their use and exotic behaviors. It covers specific subjects of quantum dynamics in a competent and detailed way with emphasis on simple systems where few atoms or electrons are involved. This volume will prove to be a useful tool for graduate students as well as experienced physicists.

Hamiltonian Mechanics

This volume contains invited papers and contributions delivered at the International Conference on Hamiltonian Mechanics: Integrability and Chaotic Behaviour, held in Tornn, Poland during the summer of 1993. The conference was supported by the NATO Scientific and Environmental Affairs Division as an Advanced Research Workshop. In fact, it was the first scientific conference in all Eastern Europe supported by NATO. The meeting was expected to establish contacts between East and West experts as well as to study the current state of the art in the area of Hamiltonian Mechanics and its applications. I am sure that the informal atmosphere of the city of Torun, the birthplace of Nicolaus Copernicu...

Reconstructive Microvascular Surgery

For many years, the operative manipulation of the most minute struc tures was frustrated by the limitations of the human eye. With the introduction of the operating microscope by Nylen (1921), fine detailed anatomy was made visible, so that structures could be prepared, pre sented and manipulated. Nylen used the microscope for treating dis eases of the middle ear. In 1946 Perrit in the U.S.A. introduced the operating microscope into the field of ophthalmic surgery. In 1964, Smith, Kunze and Mitchen published reports on their clinical experi ence using the operating microscope in nerve surgery. Using this tech nique, it was possible to divide a peripheral nerve into individual fascicle bundle...

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 19th International Conference on Case-Based Reasoning, held in London, UK, in September 2011. The 32 contributions presented together with 3 invited talks were carefully reviewd and selected from 67 submissions. The presentations and posters covered a wide range of CBR topics of interest both to practitioners and researchers, including CBR methodology covering case representation, similarity, retrieval, and adaptation; provenance and maintenance; recommender systems; multi-agent collaborative systems; data mining; time series analysis; Web applications; knowledge management; legal reasoning; healthcare systems and planning systems.

  • Publisher: Springer

Initially a subfield of solid state physics, the study of mesoscopic systems has evolved over the years into a vast field of research in its own right. Keeping track its rapid progress, this book provides a broad survey of the latest developments in the field. The focus is on statistics and dynamics of mesoscopic systems with special emphasis on topics like quantum chaos, localization, noise and fluctuations, mesoscopic optics and quantum transport in nanostructures. Written with nonspecialists in mind, this book will also be useful to graduate students wishing to familiarize themselves with this field of research.

Decoherence and Time-Resolved Readout in Superconducting Quantum Circuits (Dekohärenz und Zeitaufgelösste Quantenmessung in Supraleitenden Schaltkreisen)

Superconducting quantum circuits are promising candidates for solid-state based quantum computation. However, minimizing dissipation caused by external noise sources remains a tough challenge. Here, we present an analytic dissipative theory for a complex circuit of two resonators coupled via a flux qubit. In this 'quantum switch', the qubit acts as a tunable coupler between the resonators, which enables switching their interaction on and off. A natural application of this setup is to create entangled two-resonator states. However, it turns out that, even if the qubit has no dynamics, qubit dissipation affects the resonators to a considerable degree. For successful quantum information process...
