The leading international authorities bring together in this contributed volume the latest research and current thinking on advanced fiber reinforced cement composites. Under rigorous editorial control, 13 chapters map out the key properties and behaviour of these materials, which promise to extend their applications into many more areas in the coming years.
With contributions derived from presentations at an international conference, Non-Associative Algebra and Its Applications explores a wide range of topics focusing on Lie algebras, nonassociative rings and algebras, quasigroups, loops, and related systems as well as applications of nonassociative algebra to geometry, physics, and natural sciences. This book covers material such as Jordan superalgebras, nonassociative deformations, nonassociative generalization of Hopf algebras, the structure of free algebras, derivations of Lie algebras, and the identities of Albert algebra. It also includes applications of smooth quasigroups and loops to differential geometry and relativity.
The last two decades have seen prodigious growth in the application of brain imaging methods to questions of substance abuse and addiction. Despite considerable advances in our understanding of the central effects of drugs provided by preclinical data, relatively little direct evidence was known of how substances of abuse affect the brain and other eNS processes in humans. Brain imaging techniques have allowed access to the human brain and enabled the asking of questions never before imagined. The positron emission tomography (PET) data ofVolkow and her colleagues in the late 1980s, showing the uptake and time course of cocaine's binding in the human brain, revealed for the first time the di...

Metallothioneins (MTs) represent a large family of proteins characterized by high heavy metal content (mainly CuII and ZnII) and by an unusual cysteine abundance. They have a powerful protective function in all animal tissues, due most likely to their properties as free radical scavengers protecting against oxidative damage. Moreover, the presence and overexpression of MTs in various pathological conditions, such as metal dyshomeostasis, cell proliferation, neurological disorders, and chemotherapy and radiotherapy resistance, could be used as an important prognostic marker, as a histopathological diagnostic tool, and to follow specific pharmacological treatments. This important book explores the role of MTs in the field of neurological disorders (brain inflammation, Alzheimer's and prion diseases, autism, ALS, etc.), cardiology (cardiomyopathy, atherosclerosis), and oncology (melanoma, prostate and breast cancer), through authoritative contributions and a description of basic biochemical information and paradigmatic pathological events.
