The most important advance in recent epileptology is the recognition of epileptic syndromes and diseases, most of which are well defined and easy to diagnose. The benign childhood partial seizures syndromes exemplify the importance of a precise diagnosis and classification of epilepsies. They are common, and have an excellent prognosis which is better than that of febrile convulsions. Paediatricians and clinical neurophysiologists are now familiar with the Rolandic seizures but are not yet accustomed to diagnosing other benign childhood partial seizures and in particular benign childhood occipital seizures which are often confused with cerebral insults or migraine. The aim of this reference book is to describe the clinical and EEG manifestations of benign childhood partial seizures with particular emphasis on the occipital seizures which are often more characteristic, easier to diagnose and, in some cases, more benign than Rolandic seizures.
About 20% of people with epilepsy have seizures which are resistant to anticonvulsant medications. These drug-resistant seizures are called `intractable', and the patients who have them - about 1 in 500 of the general population - present a major challenge to neurologists and epilepsy associations. The present volume describes the symptomatology of the major `intractable' syndromes, the most appropriate drugs for each, and the possibilities for surgical control. Research related to the causes and effects of unchecked seizures is presented, and new directions in prevention and therapy are discussed.

This book collects the results of clinical experience and research, as well as the opionions of the specialists who have studied in depth several rare and complex syndromes associated with "Continuous Spikes and Waves During Slow Sleep", the Landau-Kleffner syndrome, and related conditions. It also presents a wide-ranging collection of cases presented by the participants in the meeting, and analysed in its various clinical, electrophysiological and psycho-intellectual aspects. The purpose of the book is to provide a thorough updated on specialised knowledge about the syndromes characterised by the presence of CSWS on the EEG, to bring out the many, still unanswered -- questions, and to stimulate further interdisciplinary research to verify the validity of present hypotheses, in order to clarify which preventive and therapeutic methods can best attain the control of such syndromes.
Although the philosopher ʿAbd al-Laṭīf al-Baġdādī (1162 -1231) received an extensive education in the thought of Avicenna, he still journeyed long in search of true philosophy. It was in Cairo that he finally discovered a model of philosophical metaphysics rooted in Greek thought as set out in Kindian and Farabian writings. This volume is devoted to the study of Aristotle’s Metaphysics and other Greek metaphysical writing gathered together by this Muslim philosopher to form a ‘Metaphysical Science’ in his Book of the Science of Metaphysics (Kitāb fī ʿilm mā baʿd al-ṭabīʿa).
