Subsea Pipeline Design, Analysis, and Installation

As deepwater wells are drilled to greater depths, pipeline engineers and designers are confronted with new problems such as water depth, weather conditions, ocean currents, equipment reliability, and well accessibility. Subsea Pipeline Design, Analysis and Installation is based on the authors' 30 years of experience in offshore. The authors provide rigorous coverage of the entire spectrum of subjects in the discipline, from pipe installation and routing selection and planning to design, construction, and installation of pipelines in some of the harshest underwater environments around the world. All-inclusive, this must-have handbook covers the latest breakthroughs in subjects such as corrosion prevention, pipeline inspection, and welding, while offering an easy-to-understand guide to new design codes currently followed in the United States, United Kingdom, Norway, and other countries. - Gain expert coverage of international design codes - Understand how to design pipelines and risers for today's deepwater oil and gas - Master critical equipment such as subsea control systems and pressure piping

Plasticity in the Somatosensory System of Developing and Mature Mammals — The Effects of Injury to the Central and Peripheral Nervous System

Rarely have the many mechanisms that might underlie neural plasticity been examined as explicitly as they are in this broad, lavishly illustrated treatment of plasticity in the somatosensory system. The reader is provided with state-of-the-art knowledge of connections at all levels of the somatosensory system. The authors examine the propensity for changes of connectivity in both the mature and developing mammal and make clear proposals regarding the mechanisms underlying these changes. Their functional significance to relevant psychophysical and neurological observations is also discussed.

An Introduction to Clinical Trials

An Introduction to clinical trials is a concise step-by-step guide to the principles and practices of clinical trials for those studying clinical trials or new to working on one. Clinical trials are critical to the progress of medicine and improving healthcare, as they evaluate whether new treatments and interventions work. They are also complex, multidisciplinary projects that integrate science, ethics, and legal requirements in the conduct of medical research. Starting with the research question, An Introduction to clinical trials explains study design, sample size determination, study set-up, study conduct, statistical analysis, and dissemination of the results. The book primarily focusse...

EPDF and EPUB available Open Access under CC-BY-NC-ND licence. This important book offers practical advice for using evidence and research in policymaking. The book has two aims. First, it builds a case for ethics and global values in research and knowledge exchange, and second, it examines specific policy areas and how evidence can guide practice. The book covers important policy areas including the GM debate, the environment, Black Lives Matter and COVID-19. Each chapter assesses the ethical challenges, the status of evidence in explaining or describing the issue and possible solutions to the problem. The book will enable policymakers and their advisors to seek evidence for their decisions from research that has been conducted ethically and with integrity.

Synchronization of EEG Activity in Epilepsies

Synchronization of EEG Activity in Epilepsies

The onset of an epileptic seizure has become a matter of prime interest in the last two decades. For successful therapy it is of the greatest importance to understand how the different inhibitory mechanisms involved in the normally functioning brain are carried out, and how the devastating avalanche of the seizure activity may overrun wide areas of grey matter. This problem of how an attack may arise has been dealt with in several monographs, but from different points of view: on the one hand chiefly from the viewpoint of the clinical EEG (GAsTAuT et al. 1969), on the other hand from the viewpoint of experimental epilepsy, starting with the activities observed at the level of the nerve cell (JASPER et al. 1969). This volume has quite a different perspective. It contains the papers and discussions presented at a Symposium organized by the Austrian Academy of Sciences, the aim of which was to arrive at a better understanding of some of the electrical phenomena accompanying the epileptic seizure.
