Neuropathology of Focal Epilepsies
Interdisciplinary co-operation between epileptologists, neuroradiologists, psychologists and neurosurgeons is the most fundamental prerequisite for localising and performing targeted resections of epileptogenic foci from patients with focal therapy resistant epilepsy. Worldwide there has been a steady increase in the number of epilepsy surgery centres, and in the number of operations performed on children and babies. A systematic neuropathological description is presented here involving macroscopic and histological findings. In this book, a systematic documentation of characteristic as well as rarer alterations is presented involving 444 patients who had been operated on in Germany between 1990 and 1997 at the Bethel Epilepsy Centre in Bielefeld. It includes 257 patients with temporal lobes (TLE) and 187 patients with extratemporal epilepsy (ETE).
Alluvial Fans
Alluvial fans are important sedimentary environments. They trap sediment delivered from mountain source areas, and exert an important control on the delivery of sediment to downstream environments, to axial drainages and to sedimentary basins. They preserve a sensitive record of environmental change within the mountain source areas. Alluvial fan geomorphology and sedimentology reflect not only drainage basin size and geology, but change in response to tectonic, climatic and base-level controls. Water Supply and Water Scarcity
This Book includes selected papers that has been published in the Water journal Special Issue (SI) on Water Supply and Water Scarcity. Moreover, an overview of the SI is included. The papers selected for publication in the SI include review and research papers on water history, on water management issues under water scarcity regimes, on rainwater harvesting, on water quality and degradation, and on climatic variability impacts on water resources. Overall, the issue identify and highlight the main challenges in water sector, and particularly in management and protection of water resources and in use of alternative (non-conventional) water resources, especially in areas with demographic change and climate vulnerability in order to achieve sustainable and secure water supply. Furthermore, general guidelines and possible solutions for an improved and sophisticated water management system are proposed and discussed, such as the adoption of advanced technological solutions and practices that improve water-use efficiency and the use of alternative water resources, to address the growing environmental and health issues and to reduce the emerging conflicts among water users.
Materials Science and Applied Physics
The Second Mexican Meeting on Mathematical and Experimental Physics brought together scientists from many different fields. The Meeting was divided into three Symposia: (i) Materials Science and Applied Physics, (ii) Statistical Physics and Beyond, (iii) Gravitation and Cosmology. This volume corresponds to the Materials Science and Applied Physics symposium and contains contributions in a wide range of subjects reflecting the research being performed at several Mexican universities and institutes as well as some outstanding invited speakers from abroad showing us some areas where, for several reasons, Mexico has developed little or no research. Genesis – In The Beginning deals with the origin and diversity of Life and early biological evolution and discusses the question of where (hot or cold sources) and when the beginning of Life took place.
