Flowing Matter

This open access book, published in the Soft and Biological Matter series, presents an introduction to selected research topics in the broad field of flowing matter, including the dynamics of fluids with a complex internal structure -from nematic fluids to soft glasses- as well as active matter and turbulent phenomena. Flowing matter is a subject at the crossroads between physics, mathematics, chemistry, engineering, biology and earth sciences, and relies on a multidisciplinary approach to describe the emergence of the macroscopic behaviours in a system from the coordinated dynamics of its microscopic constituents. Depending on the microscopic interactions, an assembly of molecules or of mes...

Harmonic Analysis and Convexity

Harmonic Analysis and Convexity

In recent years, the interaction between harmonic analysis and convex geometry has increased which has resulted in solutions to several long-standing problems. This collection is based on the topics discussed during the Research Semester on Harmonic Analysis and Convexity at the Institute for Computational and Experimental Research in Mathematics in Providence RI in Fall 2022. The volume brings together experts working in related fields to report on the status of major problems in the area including the isomorphic Busemann-Petty and slicing problems for arbitrary measures, extremal problems for Fourier extension and extremal problems for classical singular integrals of martingale type, among others.

New Developments in Singularity Theory

New Developments in Singularity Theory

Singularities arise naturally in a huge number of different areas of mathematics and science. As a consequence, singularity theory lies at the crossroads of paths that connect many of the most important areas of applications of mathematics with some of its most abstract regions. The main goal in most problems of singularity theory is to understand the dependence of some objects of analysis, geometry, physics, or other science (functions, varieties, mappings, vector or tensor fields, differential equations, models, etc.) on parameters. The articles collected here can be grouped under three headings. (A) Singularities of real maps; (B) Singular complex variables; and (C) Singularities of homomorphic maps.

There have been two major review articles on the iodine laser in the last ll seven years, liThe Photochemical Iodine Laser by K. Hohla and K. Kompa (Handbook of Chemical Lasers, edited by R. Gross and J. Bott, Wi 1 ey, New York,1976) and a SANDIA report (No. 78-1071, 1978) entitled liThe Atomic Iodine Laserll. Since then, a large body of new material has been published, and practical experience has been gained with large iodine laser systems in Garchi ng (ASTERIX II I) and in the USSR. These 1 asers have now become very reliable tools, especially in fusion-oriented plasma experiments, which represent their main field of application. They can deliver powers in excess of many terawatts per bea...

Hamilton’s Ricci Flow

Hamilton’s Ricci Flow

Ricci flow is a powerful analytic method for studying the geometry and topology of manifolds. This book is an introduction to Ricci flow for graduate students and mathematicians interested in working in the subject. To this end, the first chapter is a review of the relevant basics of Riemannian geometry. For the benefit of the student, the text includes a number of exercises of varying difficulty. The book also provides brief introductions to some general methods of geometric analysis and other geometric flows. Comparisons are made between the Ricci flow and the linear heat equation, mean curvature flow, and other geometric evolution equations whenever possible. Several topics of Hamilton's program are covered, such as short time existence, Harnack inequalities, Ricci solitons, Perelman's no local collapsing theorem, singularity analysis, and ancient solutions. A major direction in Ricci flow, via Hamilton's and Perelman's works, is the use of Ricci flow as an approach to solving the Poincaré conjecture and Thurston's geometrization conjecture.

The chapters in CYTOMETRY MCB volumes, including this 4th Edition, provide comprehensive description of particular cytometric methods and review their applications. Some chapters also describe new instrumentation and provide fundamental information on use of new fluorescent probes and on data analysis. Although the term "edition" suggests the update of earlier volumes, in fact, nearly all chapters of the 4th Edition are devoted to new topics. The authors were invited to present not only technical protocols, such as available in other methodology books that specialize in the protocol format, but also to discuss the aspects of the methodology that generally are not included in the protocols. M...

Relative Index Theory, Determinants And Torsion For Open Manifolds

Relative Index Theory, Determinants And Torsion For Open Manifolds

For closed manifolds, there is a highly elaborated theory of number-valued invariants, attached to the underlying manifold, structures and differential operators. On open manifolds, nearly all of this fails, with the exception of some special classes. The goal of this monograph is to establish for open manifolds, structures and differential operators an applicable theory of number-valued relative invariants. This is of great use in the theory of moduli spaces for nonlinear partial differential equations and mathematical physics. The book is self-contained: in particular, it contains an outline of the necessary tools from nonlinear Sobolev analysis.

This book is an easy-to-use reference that provides ready guidance on the diagnosis and treatment of the full range of tumors of the central nervous system in adults and children. The new edition has been completely revised to reflect the continually evolving landscape of neuro-oncology and provide readers with a thorough update that will inform their clinical practice. Since the previous edition, molecular neuropathology has progressed considerably, leading to a new understanding of specific clinical entities with corresponding changes in treatment concepts. Moreover, tumor biology has become better integrated with clinical neuro-oncology in truly translational efforts. These advances receive detailed attention. In addition, the structure of the book has been adapted to align with the revised 2016 version of the WHO Brain Tumor Classification. Once again, the contributors have been carefully selected as leading experts in the field. Oncology of CNS Tumors is already established as a widely used reference, and this new edition will provide optimal value for highly specialized comprehensive neuro-oncology centers as well as practicing clinicians and researchers.
