Enhanced sensitivity radio telescopes are producing dramatic results. An international conference was held in Jodrell Bank to take stock of these advances. This timely volume presents the review articles presented by a host of world experts who gathered at this meeting. We are shown how high sensitivity is advancing our understanding in radio spectral line analysis, radio continuum observations of galaxies, cosmology, pulsars, and radio emission from stars; what new and enhanced instruments are now available and those planned for the future. Our Galactic center's proximity allows astronomers to study physical pro cesses within galactic nuclei at a level of detail that will never be possible in the more distant, but usually also more spectacular, extragalactic systems. Recent advances in instrumentation from the radio, through the submillime ter and infrared wavebands, and out to the X- and "'(-ray bands now allow observations of the Galactic Center over thirteen orders of magnitude in wave length. Our knowledge about the central few hundred parsecs of our Galaxy has consequently increased vastly over the past decade. The same new instru ments provide high resolution, high quality measurements of nearby ''normal'' galactic nuclei; that is, nuclei whose modest energy output is comparable to that of our own (and most other) galaxies. Theorists, spurred in part by the new observations, have been able to refine models of the energetics, dynam ics, and evolution of the gas and stellar systems deep within galactic nuclei.
Along with the traditional optical window, many new windows have been opened on galaxies in the last two decades, made possible by new developments in groundbased detectors and by space missions that allow detection of photons that are otherwise absorbed by the Earth's atmosphere. Galaxies can now be observed in the radio, submillimeter, IR, optical, UV, X- and gamma-ray bands, each window allowing us to learn more about galactic components and properties. Prof. Leon Mestel has been an inspiration to many to study the role of magnetism in the Cosmos. To mark the occasion of his retin'ment from the University of Sussex after 43 years in astrophysics, several of his friends and former students decided to hold an advanced research workshop in his honour. The study of molecular clouds has received increasing interest over recent years, particularly in the UK with the advent of powerful new instruments such as MERLIN and the Maxwell millimetre wave telescope. This book is based on the proceedings of the Seventh Manchester International Astronomy Conference which brought together an international list of speakers to discuss important new developments in this field.
