Metabolic Pumps and Intracellular Homeostasis, Hormones and Cell Function, Intercellular Communication, Cell Motility and Contractility, Part B

Volumes 5A and 5B of Fundamentals of Medical Cell Biology are a treatment of several key subjects, including cellular signaling. One profitable way to tackle both volumes is to read them with care but without endeavouring to master most of the details. Then should follow a more plodding study, chapter by chapter. Such a strategy is also urged in respect of the preceding volumes. Although each chapter is only as detailed as space permits, it should in the case of the student serve as an incentive to the study of the original papers.

The Chlamydomonas Sourcebook: Introduction to Chlamydomonas and Its Laboratory Use

Dr. Harris has played a major role in the development of this organism as a model system. Her previous version of the Chlamydomonas Sourcebook which published in 1989, has been a classic in the field and is considered required reading for anyone working with this organism. This latest edition has been expanded to include three volumes providing molecular techniques, analysis of the recently sequenced genome, and reviews of the current status of the diverse fields in which Chlamydomonas is used as a model organism. Methods for Chlamydomonas research and best practices for applications in research, including methods for culture, preservation of cultures, preparation of media, lists of inhibito...

Cilia and Flagella

Cilia and Flagella presents protocols accessible to all individuals working with eukaryotic cilia and flagella. These recipes delineate laboratory methods and reagents, as well as critical steps and pitfalls of the procedures. The volume covers the roles of cilia and flagella in cell assembly and motility, the cell cycle, cell-cell recognition and other sensory functions, as well as human diseases and disorders. Students, researchers, professors, and clinicians should find the book's combination of "classic" and innovative techniques essential to the study of cilia and flagella.Key Features* A complete guide containing more than 80 concise technical chapters friendly to both the novice and e...

International Review of Cytology presents current advances and comprehensive reviews in cell biology – both plant and animal. Authored by some of the foremost scientists in the field, each volume provides up-to-date information and directions for future research. Articles in this volume address roles of PACAP-containing retinal ganglion cells in circadian timing; cell polarity in filamenous fungi; cellular and molecular mechanics of gliding locomotion in eukaryotes; current strategies in overcoming resistance of cancer cell and apoptosis; cell and molecular biology of the exosome: how to make of break an RNA; human hair keratin associated proteins (KAPs).

Collected Works of Shinya Inou‚

This book collects the publications of Shinya lnou‚, pioneering cell biophysicist and winner of the 2003 International Prize for Biology. The articles cover the discovery, and elucidate the behavior in living cells, of the dynamic molecular filaments which organize the cell and play a central role in cell division. Other articles report on the development of microscopes, especially those using polarized light and digital image enhancement, which make possible studies of the ever-changing molecular architecture directly in living cells. This book also contains many high quality photo-micrographs as well as an appended DVD with an extensive collection of video movies of active living cells. After training in Tokyo and at Princeton University, Dr Inou‚ has held teaching positions at the University of Washington, Tokyo Metropolitan University, University of Rochester, Dartmouth Medical School, and University of Pennsylvania. He is a member of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences and currently holds the title of Distinguished Scientist at the Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole, Massachusetts.

The green alga Chlamydomonas is widely used as an experimental model system for studies in cellular and molecular biology, and in particular plant molecular biology. This book is the only single modern compendium of information on its biology and in particular its molecular biology and genetics. Included in addition to much information on the basic biology is material of a very practical nature, namely, methods for culture, preservation of cultures, preparation of media, lists of inhibitors and other additives to culture media, help with common laboratory problems such as contamination, student demonstrations, and properties of particular strains and mutants. Casual users as well as speciali...

Volume 5 in the series Advances in Structural Biology is based upon a selection of articles presented at the Workshop on Molecular Bio-physics of the Cytoskeleton: Microtubule Formation, Structure, Function, and Interactions (August 18-22 1997 at the Banff Conference Centre in Banff, Alberta, Canada). Its main objective was to review the state-of-the-art of the field and stimulate a multidisciplinary investigation into the molecular biology of the cytoskeleton, which is amply manifested in the articles selected and published in this volume.

Algal Cell Motility

Algae exhibit the greatest variety of cell motility phenomena in the living world. These range from the peculiar gliding motility of filamentous blue green algae or cyanobacteria to chloroplast movements and cytoplasmic streaming which are most common in higher plants. In addition, cell motility by eukaryotic flagella is the characteristic mode of cell locomotion in algal flagellates and most reproductive cells of algae. Algae use these cell motility systems mainly to orient themselves or their photosynthetic organelles in a suitable light gradient to optimize growth and reproduction. In consequence most of the motility systems are coupled to photoreceptors and are regulated by signal transd...

The Chlamydomonas Sourcebook: Cell Motility and Behavior

This volume reviews virtually everything that is known about cell motility and behavior in Chlamydomonas. World experts in each area focus on mitosis and cytokinesis; flagellar assembly and motility; intraflagellar transport, and more will use this reference as a guide for understanding human diseases of the cilium. The volume is richly illustrated and is supplemented by a Website containing both classic and previously unpublished videos of cell motility in Chlamydomonas. Because Chlamydomonas has been the premier model for investigating the function and behavior of cilia and flagella, the chapters summarize the current state of knowledge in these areas as it applies to all ciliated organism...
