What Blood Won’t Tell

Is race something we know when we see it? In 1857, Alexina Morrison, a slave in Louisiana, ran away from her master and surrendered herself to the parish jail for protection. Blue-eyed and blond, Morrison successfully convinced white society that she was one of them. When she sued for her freedom, witnesses assured the jury that she was white, and that they would have known if she had a drop of African blood. Morrison’s court trial—and many others over the last 150 years—involved high stakes: freedom, property, and civil rights. And they all turned on the question of racial identity. Over the past two centuries, individuals and groups (among them Mexican Americans, Indians, Asian immig...

After Hours is a celebration of Bradford J. Smith's (1925 - 2016) vintage photography. Brad was a photographer for over 75 years. During his long and varied career he amassed a multitude of stunning photographs. However none were more compelling than his work as a fashion photographer in NYC in the '40s and '50s. By day, fashion photos for Harper's Bazaar. By night, nude portraits of aspiring actresses. Among his after hours models was a young "Betty" Bacall. Sadly, that is a photo you won't see in the book as it was bought back by enraged husband Humphrey Bogart. According to John A. Staszyn, Appraisers Association of America, "The photographs by Bradford Smith contain many of the same qualities of the Conde Nast photographers. The composition, lighting, posing and quality of the prints reflect the positive, creative and alluring aspects of some of Conde Nast's best known photographers such as: Horst, Cecil Beaton, Edward Stiechen, Frances McLaughlin-Gill and more."

Double Lives

“Terrifying” true stories of criminals who live seemingly normal lives, perfect for fans of Mindhunter—”these are the stories that keep me up at night” (Sgt. Joseph Kuns, LAPD). “He seemed so normal” is an all-too common sentiment from the neighbors of violent criminals when their heinous acts are finally exposed. There are often no obvious indicators that separate the pleasant neighbor from the sadistic murderer. Even serial killers like Jeffrey Dahmer, Ted Bundy, and John Wayne Gacy managed to circulate unnoticed among their communities. They are neighbors and students, professionals and friends living out criminal double lives. In Double Lives, true crime author Eric Brach p...

Computers in the Human Interaction Loop

This book integrates a wide range of research topics related to and necessary for the development of proactive, smart, computers in the human interaction loop, including the development of audio-visual perceptual components for such environments; the design, implementation and analysis of novel proactive perceptive services supporting humans; the development of software architectures, ontologies and tools necessary for building such environments and services, as well as approaches for the evaluation of such technologies and services. The book is based on a major European Integrated Project, CHLI (Computers in the Human Interaction Loop), and throws light on the paradigm shift in the area of HCI that rather than humans interactive directly with machines, computers should observe and understand human interaction, and support humans during their work and interaction in an implicit and proactive manner.
