The Vision Zero Petition
In the aftermath of losing our two youngest daughters, AnnaLeah (17) and Mary (13), due to a truck underride crash on May 4, 2013, we became aware of far too many facts about tra ffic fatalities. In an e ffort to do more than just put a bandaid on the problem, we launched a campaign to call for major change in how safety laws and regulations are determined. Th€is book is a compilation of our request for a National Vision Zero Goal and for a Vision Zero rulemaking policy. Fort San Juan and the Limits of Empire
Built in 1566 by Spanish conquistador Juan Pardo, Fort San Juan is the earliest known European settlement in the interior United States. Located at the Berry site in western North Carolina, the fort and its associated domestic compound stood near the Native American town of Joara, whose residents sacked the fort and burned the compound after only eighteen months. Drawing on archaeological evidence from architectural, floral, and faunal remains, as well as newly discovered accounts of Pardo's expeditions, this volume explores the deterioration in Native American–Spanish relations that sparked Joara's revolt and offers critical insight into the nature of early colonial interactions.
Cemeteries of Unicoi Country
This labor of love began as one of the first major projects of the newly-formed Unicoi County Historical Society in the early 1970s. By 1973, about 35 cemeteries, all in the northern part of the county, had been copied. Fifteen years went by, and then, in the winter of 1987–1988, a new committee was formed and the project was begun again. The committee found that in 1960, 15 cemeteries, mostly in the southern part of the county, had been copied, adding up to a total of 50 cemeteries that had been recorded. Final copying began in April 1988 and was completed a little over a year later. The total of 166 copied included an update of the 50 cemeteries done earlier.

The Family of John Cooke
John Cooke was born in London in about 1752. His parents may have been John Cook and Elizabeth Gurney. He emigrated in about 1767. He married Nellie Pemberton in about 1775. They lived in Virginia and had five children. Nellie died in 1812 and John married Anne Keatley Hendrix 29 June 1813. He died in Wyoming County, West Virginia in 1832. Descendants and relatives lived mainly in West Virginia.
