In a seminal study, Cur cantatur?, Anders Ekenberg examined Carolingian sources for explanations of why the liturgy was sung, rather than spoken. This multidisciplinary volume takes up Ekenberg’s question anew, investigating the interplay of New Testament writings, sacred spaces, biblical interpretation, and reception history of liturgical practices and traditions. Analyses of Greek, Latin, Coptic, Arabic, and Gǝʿǝz sources, as well as of archaeological and epigraphic evidence, illuminate an array of topics, including recent trends in liturgical studies; manuscript variants and liturgical praxis; Ignatius of Antioch’s choral metaphor; baptism in ancient Christian apocrypha; and the significance of late ancient altar veils.
Papers collected in this volume try to illuminate various aspects of philosophical theology dealt with by different Jewish and early Christian authors and texts (e.g. the Acts of the Apostles, Philo, Origen, Gregory of Nazianzus), rooted in and influenced by the Hellenistic religious, cultural, and philosophical context, and they also focus on the literary and cultural traditions of Hellenized Judaism and its reception (e.g. Sibylline Oracles, Prayer of Manasseh), including material culture ("Elephant Mosaic Panel" from Huqoq synagogue). By studying the Hellenistic influences on early Christianity, both in response to and in reaction against early Hellenized Judaism, the volume intends not only to better understand Christianity, as a religious and historical phenomenon with a profound impact on the development of European civilization, but also to better comprehend Hellenism and its consequences which have often been relegated to the realm of political history.

This volume proceeds from a workshop at the XVIII International Conference on Patristic Studies (Oxford, 2019) and presents developments in recent and ongoing research on the complex tradition of Psalter catenae. The twelve contributions cover a wide range of topics, presenting methodological developments and challenges of catena research as well as fresh insights on specific subjects, such as new manuscript finds and the publication of illustrations and captions in catena manuscripts. The studies range from the first Palestinian stages of Psalter catenae to later Byzantine compositions, and beyond: the Oriental versions receive particular attention. The volume offers students and scholars who are less familiar with research on Psalter catenae a taste of its diversity. Those who have already dealt intensively with this tradition and related topics will find useful research tools and interesting new results. Most of the volume is written in English; two contributions are in French and two in German. The printed volume is accompanied by two databases that are made available online, which allow for more complex search queries.
The written accounts of the Jesus tradition in the Gospels have taken a far superior position in the Christian faith to any oral tradition. The authority of canonical texts, especially of the Bible, is often described in static definitions. However, the authority of these texts was acquired as well as exercised in a dynamic process of transmission and reception. This book analyzes selected aspects of this historical process. Attention is paid to biblical master-texts and to other texts related to the “biblical worlds” in various historical periods and contexts. The studies examine particular texts, textual variants, translations, paraphrases and other elements in the process of textual transmission. The range covered spans from the Iron Age, through the Old Testament texts, their manuscripts and other texts from Qumran, the Septuagint, down to the New Testament, Apocrypha, Coptic texts, Patristics, and even modern translations of the Bible.
