Design para um mundo complexo propõe atualizar a discussão realizada em Design para o mundo real, de Victor Papanek, publicado em 1971. O designer norte-americano alertava ali para a crescente perda de sentido do design de matriz modernista, perversamente estetizado diante de um mundo assolado pela miséria, violência e degradação, e conclamava os designers a saírem de seu universo autorreferente para projetarem soluções para a realidade. Mais de quatro décadas depois, somam-se a esse mundo real descrito por Papanek uma preocupante aceleração da vida, falta de tempo e excesso de informação, sem que isso colabore necessariamente para produzir mais e melhor conhecimento. A leitura do livro, em si vista por Cardoso como um ato de resistência a essa aceleração, expõe os dilemas do design nesse contexto de maneira clara e acessível, tanto para o leigo quanto para o estudioso.
