To Be a Worker
A contemporary classic in Peru, where it was first published in 1986, this book explores changes in the political identity and economic strategies of the Peruvian working class in the 1970s and 1980s. Jorge Parodi uses a case study of Metal Empresa, a large factory in Lima, to trace the surge and decline of the labor movement in Peru--and in Latin America more generally--through the successes and frustrations of the members of a once-powerful union as they coped with the nation's deteriorating economic situation. By the early 1970s, Metal Empresa was the site of one of the most radical and aggressive unions in Peruvian industry. But as the decade drew to a close, political and economic crises soured the environment for trade unionism and rendered unions less able to produce palpable benefits for their members. Through in-depth, often poignant interviews, including an extensive oral history of one of the workers, Jesus Zuniga, Parodi shows how workers desperate to support themselves and their families were increasingly forced to seek opportunities outside the industrial sector. In the process, he shows, they began to question their very identities as workers.

Beginning with volume 41 (1979), the University of Texas Press became the publisher of the Handbook of Latin American Studies, the most comprehensive annual bibliography in the field. Compiled by the Hispanic Division of the Library of Congress and annotated by a corps of more than 130 specialists in various disciplines, the Handbook alternates from year to year between social sciences and humanities. The Handbook annotates works on Mexico, Central America, the Caribbean and the Guianas, Spanish South America, and Brazil, as well as materials covering Latin America as a whole. Most of the subsections are preceded by introductory essays that serve as biannual evaluations of the literature and research under way in specialized areas. The Handbook of Latin American Studies is the oldest continuing reference work in the field. Lawrence Boudon became the editor in 2000. La Maestría en Relaciones Laborales de la Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú (PUCP) rinde homenaje a su fundador con este libro que tienes entre tus manos. Nuestro deseo fue lograr su publicación con su presencia, pero, lamentablemente, Denis nos dejó el pasado 19 de setiembre de 2022, antes de materializarlo. Denis Sulmont fue el primer director de nuestra maestría a fines de los noventa, luego de una vasta trayectoria académica en nuestra universidad, impulsó la conformación de una maestría que estudiase las relaciones laborales desde la multiplicidad académica (Sociología, Derecho, Economía, Gestión y Psicología) dando forma a una interdisciplinaridad como herramienta metodológica y conceptual de estudio. En realidad, la maestría refleja su forma de abordar el análisis de las relaciones laborales. Este Libro homenaje es elaborado en base al propio pensamiento de Denis, es decir, seleccionando alguno de los temas desarrollado por él, las autoras y los autores escriben sus artículos desde una interpretación actualizada, manteniendo vivo y vigente su pensamiento.
