The Economics of Immigration Beyond the Cities
This book explores how migrants and refugees can revitalise peripheral regions and communities economically. The extent to which migrants stimulate the economic activities of these regions through labour market participation, entrepreneurship, innovation and consumption is examined theoretically and empirically for the EU as a whole, as well as through empirical case studies that highlight the impact of migration at macro, company, and individual levels. A particular focus is given to the economic consequences of Third Country Nationals to places beyond the cities, i.e. the peripheral and remote regions of Europe. This book aims to provide insight into the role of migrations in low productive and labour-intensive regions. The authors provide innovative policy recommendations to stimulate the positive economic consequences of immigration to places beyond the cities. It will be of interest to students, researchers, and policymakers working within labour economics and migration and integration policies.
Revisiting Public-Private Partnerships
This edited volume discusses the resilience of public-private partnerships (PPPs) in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. Using a comparative lens, the book assesses the degree to which global PPP infrastructure projects have been affected by the pandemic and details short term and long-term measures undertaken by governments and private parties to mitigate disruption to infrastructure delivery. Secondly, it focuses on improving the state-of-art knowledge by suggesting future directions to be taken by governments, practitioners, and researchers in order to create resilience in infrastructure projects when using PPPs as the delivery model. Chapters present diverse case studies of PPP governance across countries, covering topics such as regulatory issues, risk management, financing, contractual governance, arbitration, and stakeholder management. Providing a systematic review, assessment, and research agenda on lessons learned from the pandemic, this volume will appeal to researchers and students of public administration, public economics, construction management, infrastructure management, and public management, as well as practitioners and government professionals.

The Effects of Wars
War has been an ever-present feature of human existence. The analysis of wars has tended to focus on either their causes or the military and strategic consequences of a conflict. This book argues that war can have a much wider impact across layers of society that go beyond international boundaries. It presents a heuristic multi-disciplinary framework for analysing the ripple and backwash effects across five connected analytical layers around the world: material; human capabilities; economic; values belief and attitudes; policy and governance; and power. Through this framework, the book introduces a set of empirically rich and theoretically informed studies which examine the first consequences of the war in Ukraine following the invasion of Russia in February 2022. This multi-disciplinary approach shows that the effects of the war were much deeper and sustained. This volume will be of interest to students and scholars of international humanitarian law, security studies, peace and conflict studies, and European history.
