Robot Operating System (ROS)

This book is the seventh volume of the successful book series on Robot Operating System: The Complete Reference, which started in 2016. The book's objective is to provide the reader with comprehensive coverage on the Robot Operating Systems (ROS) and the latest trends and contributed systems. ROS has been considered as the primary development framework for robotics applications. There are seven chapters organized into three parts. Part I presents one chapter dealing with ROS2 and presents a tutorial on using the MediaPipe framework with ROS2. In Part II, three chapters present new contributions of ROS frameworks and applications, including micro-ROS, Autonomous 3D Thermal Mapping of Disaster Environments, and Lab-scale Smart Factory Implementation Using ROS. Part III provides contributions on how to use ROS for cooperative robotics behaviors, particularly in platoon applications, in addition to developing new perception and control algorithms with sensing technologies. This book will be a valuable companion for ROS users and developers to learn more about ROS capabilities and features.

This book constitutes the thoroughly refereed post-conference proceedings of the first International Workshop on Quality of Context, QuaCon 2009, held in Stuttgart, Germany, in June 2009. The 11 revised papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from 19 submissions and included in the volume together with 5 invited papers. Discussed are interdisciplinary approaches to context quality, such as models for degradation and consistency of context data, spatial ontologies and spatial data mining, trust in context data, methods and calculi for context quality assessment, frameworks and metrics for context quality, uncertainty in sensor data processing, quality-aware algorithms for context management, quality-aware event and stream processing, uncertainty in reasoning on context data, application-specific context quality and case studies, and visualization of context quality.

Leading Rome from a Distance, 300 BCE–37 CE

Roman political leaders used distance from Rome as a key political tool to assert pre-eminence. Through the case studies of Caesar's hegemony, Augustus's autocracy, and Tiberius's reign, this book examines how these figures' experiences and manipulations of absence established a multipolar focus of political life centred less on the city of Rome, and more on the idea of a single leader. The Roman expansion over Italy and the Mediterranean put the political system under considerable stress, and eventually resulted in a dispersal of leadership and a decentralization of power. Absent generals rivalled their peers in Rome for influence and threatened to surpass them from the provinces. Roman lea...

Computing with Spatial Trajectories

Spatial trajectories have been bringing the unprecedented wealth to a variety of research communities. A spatial trajectory records the paths of a variety of moving objects, such as people who log their travel routes with GPS trajectories. The field of moving objects related research has become extremely active within the last few years, especially with all major database and data mining conferences and journals. Computing with Spatial Trajectories introduces the algorithms, technologies, and systems used to process, manage and understand existing spatial trajectories for different applications. This book also presents an overview on both fundamentals and the state-of-the-art research inspir...

Court-Ordered Insanity

In preparation for his new study, Dr. Holstein observed several hundred commitment hearings in five widely separated jurisdictions. He then undertook a description of the interpretive practice under which the courts determined whether or not "candidate patients" should be committed against their will to institutions for the mentally ill. He has approached these hearings as a conversational analyst, examining the interaction among judges, lawyers, psychiatrists, and the patients themselves. He argues that decisions to commit are products of those conversations, that the ways in which patients are identified and responded to as concrete instances of "deviance" or "social problems" are constitu...

Medieval Warfare: Technology, Military Revolutions, and Strategy

This volume explores the topics of military revolutions, strategy, and tactics both separately and as they relate to each other. It makes important contributions to understanding European warfare in the Early, High, and especially the Late Middle Ages, as well the military transition to the Early Modern Period. Readers will find detailed analysis of how technological and non-technological developments interacted to effect major changes in how wars were fought across the period. The evolution and capabilities of the English longbow and of early gunpowder artillery are examined in depth. Changes in the tools of war naturally affected plans to employ those tools to achieve political ends – mi...

Contexts of Deviance

While most readers focus more on deviance than sociology, Contexts of Deviance: Statuses, Institutions, and Interactions brings sociology front and center by examining deviance and social control in their social contexts. This fresh and innovative anthology shows students how deviance and control can be studied at different levels of analysis and from a range of theoretical approaches using different methodologies. The collection is divided into six parts: theory, social control, statuses and identities, institutions, subcultures, and social movements. The readings range from classic to contemporary pieces, from macro-level studies to studies of face-to-face encounters. Contexts of Deviance ...
