Tiempo y sociedad
En los últimos tiempos se ha venido asistiendo a un creciente interés de los científicos sociales por el análisis del tiempo. Plasmación de ese interés es una sociología del tiempo que, arrancando de precedentes clásicos, ha ido ampliando el ámbito en el que el estudio del tiempo cobra relevancia para la ciencia social. En esta compilación se pretende proporcionar una introducción histórica y sistemática a ese tipo de estudios, para lo que se han reunido algunos de los textos fundacionales publicados en el primera mitad del presente siglo (Hubert, Halbwachs, Mead, Sorokin y Merton) y otros textos actuales que amplían y enriquecen esa tradición (Luhmann, Nowotny, Lewis y Weigert, Schwartz, entre otros).
Tragedia y sociología
«¿Podemos leer trágicamente el mundo social contemporáneo? ¿Tendría sentido hacerlo? ¿Deberíamos? En los trabajos reunidos en este libro se insiste en dar una respuesta afirmativa a los tres interrogantes». Efectivamente, la presente compilación de escritos aparecidos en revistas y libros pone de manifiesto el itinerario unitario desarrollado por Ramón Ramosen pos de un objetivo: «el de pensar y reconstruir la tradición sociológica en el plano de sus relaciones con lo trágico para reivindicar su pertinencia actual, en unos tiempos marcados por el riesgo medioambiental y el temor a la catástrofe con la que amenaza el cambio climático. Que hay una tradición de lo trágico en la sociología es indudable; que esa tradición ha sido fructífera, también lo es; que se haya desarrollado de forma suficiente es más que cuestionable; que sea pertinente en la actualidad es algo sometido a debate, aunque soy de la opinión de que su pertinencia es inequívoca y que hay muy buenas razones que lo avalan».
Time's Social Metaphors
Abstract: The article addresses the analysis of time images furnished by a qualitative research made in Spain on the relations of working time and family/personal time. The analysis focuses on three widespread time metaphors used in day-to-day speeches by social agents. The first one is the metaphor of time as resource for action. Its value is equally economical, moral and political. Used in different context of action, it may mean something that can be either invested, donated generously to others, appropriated for caring for oneself, or spent without purpose with others. The second metaphor represents time as an external environment to which action must adapt. This metaphor shows many variants that represent time as a dynamic/static, repetitive/innovative, ordered/chaotic environment. In this external environment, the agents must resolve the problems of temporal embeddedness, hierarchy and synchronization of their actions. Time, Science and the Critique of Technological Reason
This festschrift commemorates the legacy of UK-based Portuguese sociologist Hermínio Martins (1934-2015). It introduces Martins’ wide-ranging contributions to the social sciences, encompassing seminal works in the fields of philosophy and social theory, historical and political sociology, studies of science and technology, and Luso-Brazilian studies, among others. The book features an in-depth interview with Martins, short memoirs, and twelve chapters addressing topics that were central to his intellectual and political interests. Among those that stand out are his critique of Thomas Kuhn’s theory of scientific revolutions, his work on the significance of time in social theory and the interweaving of techno-scientific developments and socio-cultural transformations, including the impact of communication and digital technologies, and of market-led eugenics. Other themes covered are Martins’ work on patrimonialism and social development in Portugal and Brazil, and his analysis of the state of the social sciences in Portugal, which reflects his highly critical appraisal of the ongoing marketization andneoliberalization of academic life and institutions worldwide.

El término género era desconocido hasta hace poco más de veinte años. Con su llegada se ha modificado profundamente el significado del trabajo: el trabajo sexuado ya no es el androcéntrico de hace treinta años. Pero ese encuentro ha empezado a producir plenamente sus frutos cuando se ha abierto la puerta a una tercera institución social: el tiempo. La asociación de trabajo, género y tiempo constituye uno de los cócteles teórico-metodológicos que más luz puede proyectar sobre los problemas del presente.

La incertidumbre parece omnipresente en el mundo social contemporáneo, y más aún en esta coyuntura pandémica. Era patente ya en los mercados financieros, la tecnociencia, el cambio climático o las nuevas formas de vulnerabilidad. No puede extrañar, por tanto, que haya diagnósticos sociológicos muy diversos (Bauman, Luhmann, Beck, Wynne, etc.) que la presentan como uno de los rasgos distintivos de nuestro mundo.
