Welcome to a world where the Plantagenet kings survived, the laws of magic were discovered and the physical sciences never pursued. In the resulting Anglo-French Empire, a detective like Lord Darcy needs more than a keen mind and an observant eye. Luckily, Darcy can call on the aid of Master Sean O'Lochlainn, forensic sorcerer. This omnibus contains all of the Lord Darcy stories as well as the only Lord Darcy novel, TOO MANY MAGICIANS, and has a new introduction by Michael Dirda.
Even hardened veterans of the Psychodeviant Police don't look forward to the possibility of having their minds taken over, controlled by some outside force. It had never happened to Houston, but he knew that Arthmore had been through the experience once. It evidently wasn't pleasant. By the time the dapper baronet stepped out of the machine and paid his driver, the whole area was surrounded by and filled with the well-armed, silent, and careful agents of the Psychodeviant Police. "Poor fish, " Houston thought wryly. Another Controller had been apprehended by the Psychodeviant Police. Another deviant, already tried and found guilty, was ready to be exiled from Earth and imprisoned on one of the Penal Asteroids. "There's just one thing I'd like to know, " Houston thought blackly. "What in the hell's going on?"

Like some great silver-pink fish, the ship sang on through the eternal night. There was no impression of swimming; the fish shape had neither fins nor a tail. It was as though it were hovering in wait for a member of some smaller species to swoop suddenly down from nowhere, so that it, in turn, could pounce and kill. But still it moved and sang. Only a being who was thoroughly familiar with the type could have told that this particular fish was dying. In shape, the ship was rather like a narrow flounder—long, tapered, and oval in cross-section—but it showed none of the exterior markings one might expect of either a living thing or a spaceship. With one exception, the smooth silver-pink e...
Set in an alternate reality where Richard the Lionheart’s descendants rule the Anglo-French Empire, the laws of magic have developed in place of the laws of physics. In this late 20th century world, people still travel through pea fog by horse and carriage, but magic has made levitation and enchantment spells the norm, especially at a sorcerer’s convention. The International Sorcerer’s Convention is in full swing. Until London’s Chief Forensics Sorcerer, Sir James Zwinge, is found dead inside a locked room, that is. Master Sean O Lochlainn had been at odds with Sir James over competing breakthroughs in incision-free surgery, making him the prime suspect. It’s up to Lord Darcy to solve Sir James’ murder and exonerate his own forensic sorcerer and trusted assistant. But the mystery deepens when the murder of a Naval spy is connected to that of Sir James’ death. Conflict with Poland, a dominating world power, changes the game and suddenly there is a lot more at stake than the freedom of Lord Darcy’s old friend. Too Many Magicians was nominated for the Hugo Award in 1967, and the complete Lord Darcy series later won the Sideways Award for Alternate History.
But, I Don't Think is a science fiction short story by prolific author Randall Garrett. It was first published in Astounding Science Fiction in July, 1959. It asks the question, "Are a society's laws cruel if its inhabitants like them?"A man called "The Guesser" is a Class Three member of a strict, hierarchical space-going society, that is fighting against another civilization they know only as "Misfits". The Guesser has a talent for knowing where an enemy ship will be before even the on-board computers, and aiming a weapon to destroy it. Class One Executives have many privileges but are called on to make hard decisions. Lower classes such as Five and Six do menial work. All Class members must show deference to members of a higher class, and expect it from lower classes. Punishment for transgressing takes the form of induced nerve pain in jolts over several minutes.
