"Preimesberger's incisive and erudite analysis of social history, biography, rhetoric, art theory, wordplay, and history illuminates these works anew, thus affording a modern audience a better understanding of the subtleties of their composition and meaning."--Jacket.
Although many studies have been devoted to Augustine's City of God and its most important theme, viz. the antithesis between the civitas Dei and the terrena civitas, until now no consensus has been reached concerning the sources of this doctrine. Was Augustine decisively influenced by Manichaeism, by (Neo)Platonism, the Stoa or Philo, by the Donatist Tyconius? Or should we look in another direction and refer to preceding Christian, Jewish, and especially to archaic Jewish-Christian traditions? This lucidly written books opens with a survey of the research carried out so far on the aim, structure and central theme of the City of God. Chapter 2 analyzes the essentials of Augustine's life, of hi...
A bold new interpretation of Germany’s democratic transformation in the twentieth century, focusing on the generation that shaped the post-Nazi reconstruction Not long after the horrors of World War II and the Holocaust, Germans rebuilt their shattered country and emerged as one of the leading nations of the Western liberal world. In his debut work, Noah Strote analyzes this remarkable turnaround and challenges the widely held perception that the Western Allies—particularly the United States—were responsible for Germany’s transformation. Instead, Strote draws from never-before-seen material to show how common opposition to Adolf Hitler united the fractious groups that had once vied f...
This book is one outcome of the NATO Advanced Studies Institute (ASI) Workshop, "Speechreading by Man and Machine," held at the Chateau de Bonas, Castera-Verduzan (near Auch, France) from August 28 to Septem ber 8, 1995 - the first interdisciplinary meeting devoted the subject of speechreading ("lipreading"). The forty-five attendees from twelve countries covered the gamut of speechreading research, from brain scans of humans processing bi-modal stimuli, to psychophysical experiments and illusions, to statistics of comprehension by the normal and deaf communities, to models of human perception, to computer vision and learning algorithms and hardware for automated speechreading machines. Showing that Mormonism is a genuine restoration of Primitive Christianity. To demonstrate to Latter Day Saints that "" Mormonism"" is what it exactly what it claims to be a genuine restoration of the Gospel. Mormonism is an genuine restoration of the Gospel as it was taught by disciples of the Primitive Church. This is important because through out the world Mormonism is labeled as a non-scriptural, non-Christian ""cult"", which departs in alarming in alarming ways from the traditional concepts of the bible. The claim that Mormonism is a ""cult"", and not a Christian religion, is based on the fact that Mormonism accepts none of the traditional creeds of ""orthodoxy"". The chief difficulty with this assessment is that so-called ""orthodoxy"" never existed before the fourth or fifth centuries, until the Church's original teachings had been radically altered by Greek- informed metaphysical concepts, bearing little relationship to the thought of the earliest Christians
In addition to his influential scholarship on economic and social theory, F. A. Hayek greatly impacted theoretical psychology with his book "The Sensory Order." Perhaps because he was a social scientist, Hayek s work in psychology has been mostly overlooked. Editor Viktor Vanberg frames "The Sensory Order" as an essential work necessary for any deeper understanding of Hayek s economic and social philosophy while adding on several important essays by Hayek that help illuminate the ideas of the book since its original publication in 1952. As volume 14 of the Collected Works of F. A. Hayek, "The Sensory Order "will definitively take its place as an integral and foundational part of Hayek s oeuvre."
This English translation of Knopf's commentary on the Didache and 1-2 Clement makes this influential commentary available to the English reader. Knopf's work is a crucial insight into Christianity's second century, revealing the early theological and organisational considerations, expressions, and discussions which characterised the early church. Jacob N. Cerone's scholarly insight provides verse by verse critical commentary and introductory context, and brings clarity to Knopf's rhetorical and philological analysis. A crucial resource for students and scholars, this translation illuminates Knopf's work anew.
