Grammar and Text

This volume brings together a collection of papers based on presentations given at the 10th and 11th Fora for Linguistic Sharing, organised by the Young Researchers Group of the Centro de Linguística da Universidade Nova de Lisboa (CLUNL) and held at Universidade NOVA de Lisboa, Portugal, on the 27th and 28th November 2015 and on the 25th November 2016, respectively. The papers are authored by young researchers in linguistics and present the results of original research in two broad areas, namely text and discourse linguistics and grammar. This volume also includes a brief history of the Forum for Linguistic Sharing written by its founders, Audria Leal, Carla Teixeira, Isabelle Simões Marques and Matilde Gonçalves; a keynote article on text linguistics by Matilde Gonçalves; and a keynote article on word formation by Maria do Céu Caetano. Given that it brings together contributions from different, yet complementary, subfields of linguistics, the book will appeal to a broad readership of linguists.

Artificial Intelligence in Cutaneous Lesions: Where do we Stand and What is Next?

Nonetheless, we still do not have a regulatory agency approved app or computer system being used by dermatologists (or other physicians that could be confronted with challenging skin lesions) in daily practice. Why is this? Where do we stand now? What is next in this field? It is time to deeply explore this theme.

Puppet and Spirit: Ritual, Religion, and Performing Objects

This anthology of essays, a companion to Puppet and Spirit: Ritual, Religion, and Performing Objects, Volume I, aims to explore the many types of relationships that exist between puppets, broadly speaking, and the immaterial world. The allure of the puppet goes beyond its material presence as, historically and throughout the globe, many uses of puppets and related objects have expressed and capitalized on their posited connections to other realms or ability to serve as vessels or conduits for immaterial presence. The flip side of the puppet’s troubling uncanniness is precisely the possibilities it represents for connecting to discarnate realities. Where do we see such connections in contem...

Twelve global planning and urban design interventions—and what they reveal about equity-centered urban resilience in the face of climate change. Hillside favelas in South America imperiled by landslides. Flood-threatened mobile home parks on the American Gulf Coast. Canal-side settlements facing eviction in megacities in Southeast Asia. Too often the places most vulnerable to climate change are the ones that are home to people with the fewest economic and political resources. And while some leaders are starting to take action to reduce climate risks, many early adaptation schemes have actually made preexisting inequalities worse. In The Equitably Resilient City, Zachary Lamb and Lawrence V...

From the hinterland to Hollywood

Born in the state of Alagoas, Martha Medeiros experimented severaldifferent life paths before she became known as the designer who broughttraditional Brazilian lacework to the haute couture universe. She workedas a craft seller, fair marketer, bank clerk and even as a street peddlerbefore having her creations paraded by world-class celebrities such asSofía Vergara and Beyoncé, and by the local stars Ivete Sangalo and Xuxa.Medeiros always believed fame would smile at her one day, even as shedecided to work with a material that used to be relegated to street bazaarstands and for tablecloth usage. And success did come eventually, thanksto the talent and the hard work by this Northeastern woman who couldnot count on big-shot relatives or a large bank account balance. This isa story of entrepreneurship, social inclusion and glamour, weaved by theexperienced hands of traditional lace makers and by a designer who cameup with a quintessentially Brazilian international fashion label.
