Pillared Clays and Related Catalysts

Since the first works introducing the aluminum intercalated clay family in the early 1970s, interest in the synthesis of pillared interlayered clays has increased tremendously, especially research into the properties and applications of new synthesis methods. The need for solids that could be used as cracking catalysts with larger pores than zeolitic materials has spurred the synthesis of new porous materials from clays. Pillared Clays and Related Catalysts reviews the properties and applications of pillared clays and other layered materials used as catalysts, focusing on: the acidity of pillared clays and the effect it has on catalytic performance the use of pillared clays as supports for catalytically active phases, and the use of the resulting solids in environmentally friendly reactions the applications of the selective reduction of NOx the comparison between the reactions of pillared clays and anionic clays.

This book is a special collection of articles dedicated to the preparation and characterization of nanoporous materials, such as zeolitic-type materials, mesoporous silica (SBA-15, MCM-41, and KIT-6), mesoporous metallic oxides, metal–organic framework structures (MOFs), and pillared clays, and their applications in adsorption, catalysis, and separation processes. This book presents a global vision of researchers from international universities, research centers, and industries working with nanoporous materials and shares the latest results on the synthesis and characterization of such materials, which have given rise to the special interest in their applications in basic and industrial processes.

Certain families of materials have been strongly investigated in the last decades. Among them, layered materials, as Layered Double Hydroxides (LDH) and clays, have received intense attention. A lot of work has been devoted to the development and improvement of their synthesis, purification and modification, on their characterization, and, on the other hand, on their applications, as adsorbents or (photo)catalysts, among other uses. The group of research on Solid State Chemistry, Materials Chemistry and Heterogeneous Catalysis, created and headed by Professor Vicente Rives at the University of Salamanca (Spain), has intensely worked on these and related subjects during the last forty years. ...

Crystalline solids with highly structured micro-scale pores are called zeolites. Their well-defined structure and large contact surface make them extremely useful as catalysts. Their most common use is in washing powders. Different features are caused by the shape and size of the pores and the presence of different metals in the crystal structure. Research is conducted both towards better understanding of the relations between form and function and towards identifying new possible uses. This title presents a collection of contributions from internationally renowned researchers in the field of the Science and Technology of micro and mesoporous materials. The aim of the conference is to create an international forum where researchers from academia as well as from industry can discuss ideas and evaluate the impact of zeolites, and other porous materials, on new technologies at the beginning of the new millennium. · Gives the most recent developments in the origin, synthesis and characterisation of zeolitic materials· Outlines the impact and application of zeolites in various industrial processes· An adjourned state of art in the field of zeolites and other porous materials

Composites and nanocomposites are used in cases where long durability and strength of components are required; i.e., where high stress levels, erosion processes and multiphase environments are present, including the parts under collision and impact, the parts under rotating motion and erosion (like excavation drills in oil and gas wells). The first volume of this book aims to provide a guide for fabrication of new nanocomposites mainly based on carbon nanotubes and graphene. The main topics of this volume are: Application of Nano-powders for Formation of Metal Matrix of Composites, Conjugated Polymer Nanocomposites, Biopolymer Nanocomposites, Dental Nanocomposites, Graphene-based Nanocomposites for Electrochemical Energy Storage, Polymer/Filler Composites for Optical Diffuse Reflectors, Synthesis and Applications of LDH-Based Nanocomposites, Rubber—CNT Nanocomposites, Nanocomposite Fibers with Carbon Nanotubes, Fabrications of Graphene Based Nanocomposites for Electrochemical Sensing of Drug Molecules, Recent Advances in Graphene Metal Oxide Based Nanocomposites.

Intimate Enemies

In the aftermath of a civil war, former enemies are left living side by side—and often the enemy is a son-in-law, a godfather, an old schoolmate, or the community that lies just across the valley. Though the internal conflict in Peru at the end of the twentieth century was incited and organized by insurgent Senderistas, the violence and destruction were carried out not only by Peruvian armed forces but also by civilians. In the wake of war, any given Peruvian community may consist of ex-Senderistas, current sympathizers, widows, orphans, army veterans—a volatile social landscape. These survivors, though fully aware of the potential danger posed by their neighbors, must nonetheless endeav...
