The Long Way Home

Sylvia Duncan has recently departed post-communist Czechoslovakia to come to Amsterdam, at the invitation of Nico DiCapelli. Instead, she runs into Salvadore San Martin and his motorcycle. Literally. So begins a long and perilous chase across The Netherlands and Belgium, as they find themselves once again tangling with the deadly and unscrupulous Colombian drug lord, Eduardo Fuentes. But this time, there is another player in this dangerous contest, Salvadore's brother, Raul San Martin. There is no mistaking whose side Raul is on, as he has earned the sobriquet "la mano izquierda" - the Left Hand of Eduardo Fuentes. How does Salvadore figure into all this? And will Nico be able to untangle the conundrum before Sylvia once again falls under the control of the drug lord? It's a long way home, indeed. But some won't make it home at all.

Partners in Conflict

Partners in Conflict examines the importance of sexuality and gender to rural labor and agrarian politics during the last days of Chile’s latifundia system of traditional landed estates and throughout the governments of Eduardo Frei and Salvador Allende. Heidi Tinsman analyzes differences between men’s and women’s participation in Chile’s Agrarian Reform movement and considers how conflicts over gender and sexuality shape the contours of working-class struggles and national politics. Tinsman restores women to a scholarly narrative that has been almost exclusively about men, recounting the centrality of women’s labor to the pre-Agrarian Reform world of the hacienda during the 1950s ...

This volume reaches into national and regional areas that have not received much attention in the scholarship until now, including Asia, Latin America, Africa, and the Middle East alongside Europe and North America. It also covers communication study outside of academic settings: in international organizations like UNESCO, and among commercial and civic groups. It moves beyond the trad...

Communicology of the South

This book addresses new conceptual bases for thinking critically about communication as a necessary way in which to confront power, property and the market as part of the daily resistance of Latin American subaltern cultures. The chapters research an urgent field of situated knowledge and spark a much-needed dialogue. The editors view emancipatory communication experiences as disruptive acts of resistance, prompted mainly by social movements. These experiences have opened up political modes of communication by establishing a decolonising axis in the field of communication and reconstructing the history and memory of Latin America. This book is a valuable reference for researchers, academics and students interested in the role of communication and culture in processes of social transformation.

Adapting Gender

Adapting Gender offers a cogent introduction to Mexico's film industry, the history of women's filmmaking in Mexico, a new approach to adaptation as a potential feminist strategy, and a cultural history of generational changes in Mexico. Ilana Dann Luna examines how adapted films have the potential to subvert not only the intentions of the source text, but how they can also interrupt the hegemony of gender stereotypes in a broader socio-political context. Luna follows the industrial shifts that began with Salinas de Gortari's presidency, which made the long 1990s the precise moment in which subversive filmmakers, particularly women, were able to participate more fully in the industry and por...
