This anthology expounds the rich history of Kazan Tatar poetry, which has its beginnings in the early 12th century. Poets bear witness to the cultural, political as well as spiritual history of their nations, and in this sense, the history of poetry is the history of the nation. The authors try to single out the main themes of Kazan Tatar poetry in every epoch and period of time, the most penetrating of which is the theme of forceful alienation from one's motherland. The anthology unfolds against a rich and colourful background of social, cultural and political settings of each epoch, and presents Kazan Tatar poetry as it is, preserving its rhythmical, visual and rhyming structure supported by commentaries.

In 1994, the term ‘Tatarstan model’ came into use to describe the path which one of Russia’s constituent republics had adopted during the unprecedented conditions of its transformation from a Soviet-period pseudo-autonomous entity into a democratic market-economy state. Since then, this particular model of development has attracted increasing attention from both domestic Russian and international observers, not least on account of its enduring ethnic and religious multiculturalism. Focusing as it does on one of the most interesting and unusual regional examples of the Russian market transformation, successfully piloted by the republic’s long-serving President Mintimer Shaimiev, this book also argues that whilst there may be no third way between democracy and tyranny, also in economic terms, there may be and, indeed, are different forms of successful transition not necessarily foreseen or properly understood by Western observers.
Learned by heart and copied by hand in the Volga region for generations, Kyssa’i Yusuf (The Story of Joseph) is today the only surviving work by the founder of Bulgar-Tatar literature Kol Gali (1183–1236) and is here rendered into English for the first time in its entirety by Fred Beake and Ravil Bukharaev. Supporting the translation, which is fully annotated, are forty specially commissioned illustrations by one of Russia’s leading contemporary artists Azat Minnekaev. The volume also includes a facsimile of one of the newly discovered handmade copies of the nineteenth century, together with a full introduction presenting the historical and literary context of the work. Kyssa’i Yusuf, comprising over a thousand stanzas, is an Islamic version of the well known biblical tale, and is presumed to have been a ‘popularized’version based on an earlier Islamic narrative – not unlike the late-twentieth century ‘interpretation’ found in the popular musical Joseph and His Technicolour Dreamcoat. The translation will be of special interest to biblical scholars as well as students of Islamic literature and those pursuing inter-faith studies.

This paper examines the relations between the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (Saudi Arabia) and the Russian Federation (RF) in the light of Muslim minority rights through analyzing the history of Islam in the Russian territory, with a focus on the rights of Muslims under the Tsarist rule since 1552 and during the existence of the Soviet Union.
