The story of a Detroit Free Press paperboy from the workingclass neighborhoods of Hamtramck, Michigan. On his twelfth birthday, November 20, 1971, Joe Pakotas bolts an angry household and escapes to Ann Arbor to watch the great Billy Taylor, hero of Saturday radio broadcasts, play in the Michigan-Ohio State game. Of sorts. And still manages to chase down the unnamed sources, in the heart, of some bad ink that threatens to consume his boyhood idol, and himself. Spanning the decade of the 1970s and the American continent, Empire & Victory is a literary adventure in the spirit of Huck Finn, offering a little less wisdom and a good deal more recklessness than even Tom Sawyer might abide.
Post-Conflict Rebuilding and International Law
This volume presents the research analysis of a range of scholars and experts on post conflict peacebuilding and international law from a variety of perspectives and missions. The selected essays show that peacebuilding, like the concept of peacekeeping, is not specifically provided for in the UN Charter. They also demonstrate that the record of peacebuilding, like that of peacekeeping, is varied and while both concepts are intrinsically linked, neither lends itself to precise definition. The essays consider the historical approaches to peacebuilding such as the role played by the UN in the Congo in the early 1960s and the work of the United States and its allies in rebuilding Germany and Japan in the aftermath of World War II. Finally, essays consider the major challenge for contemporary peacebuilding operations to make international administrations accountable and to ensure the involvement of the international community in helping rebuild communities and prevent the resurgence of violence.

UN Peacekeeping in Lebanon, Somalia and Kosovo
The concept of UN peacekeeping has had to evolve and change to meet the challenges of contemporary sources of conflict; consequently, peacekeeping operations have grown rapidly in number and complexity. This book examines a number of issues associated with contemporary multinational peace operations, and seeks to provide insights into the problems that arise in establishing and deploying such forces to meet the challenges of current conflicts. The focus of the book is three case studies (Lebanon, Somalia and Kosovo), involving a comparative analysis of the traditional peacekeeping in Lebanon, the more robust peace enforcement mission in Somalia, and the international administration undertaken on behalf of the international community in Kosovo. The book analyses the lessons that may be learned from these operations in terms of mandates, command and control, use of force and the relevance of international humanitarian and human rights law to such operations.
