Larry Pedigo and Marlin Rice have produced the top pest management textbook on the market for decades. New co-author Rayda Krell has helped bring the book into the twenty-first century. The successful core concepts of the book-understanding pests in their environment and using an ecological approach to combat them-remain as robust as ever. Features that instructors have come to rely on have been retained, including insect diagnostic boxes with detailed information on important species and species groups and an appendix with keys to major insect orders. New material on genetically modified plant species and regional pest technologies complement concepts in basic and applied entomology. Taxonomies and systematics of insects have been updated throughout the book.

There are an estimated 40,000 species of chrysomelids, or leaf beetles, worldwide. These biologically interesting and often colorful organisms, such as the tortoise beetles, have a broad range of life histories and fascinating adaptations. For example, there are chrysomelids with shortened wings (brachypterous) and elytra (brachelytrous), other species are viviparous, and yet other leaf beetles have complicated anti predator-parasitoid defenses. Some species, such as corn rootworms (several species in the genus Diabrotica) constitute major agricultural crop pests. Research on Chrysomelidae 1 is a the first of an intended series of volumes on the Chrysomelidae edited by Jolivet, Santiago-Blay, and Schmitt.

A Cultural History of Insects

"Insects are the form of life most alien to us. Across millennia, insects have been providers and sources of food as well as feared vectors of infection. Particular insect types have come to be associated with beauty, diligence, and social and divine order, whilst others have become symbols of invasion, disease, and social decay. Today, insects are used to create luxury goods, to pollinate crops, to color political rhetoric, and to contribute to modern-day logistics, genetics, and forensics. A Cultural History of Insects reveals how our relationship with insects - in life and in death - is one of our most productive and intimate"--
