The Politics of Species
The assumption that humans are cognitively and morally superior to other animals is fundamental to social democracies and legal systems worldwide. It legitimises treating members of other animal species as inferior to humans. The last few decades have seen a growing awareness of this issue, as evidence continues to show that individuals of many other species have rich mental, emotional and social lives. Bringing together leading experts from a range of disciplines, this volume identifies the key barriers to a definition of moral respect that includes nonhuman animals. It sets out to increase concern, empathy and inclusiveness by developing strategies that can be used to protect other animals from exploitation in the wild and from suffering in captivity. Headhunters from the Swamps
In 1905, the Tilburg Missionaries of the Sacred Heart established their first mission post among the Marind Anim on the southwest coast of New Guinea. These Dutch missionaries were to witness the swift and dramatic demise of an ancient cultural tradition. They recorded its intricate cosmology, complex initiation ceremonies, spectacular art and intensive headhunting in writing and photographs. "They are veritable human beings, sensible beings, with a delightful language, unwritten literature, and an appreciation for all that is good and beautiful," one missionary reported. "How low, how unfathomably low these people here have stooped, [...] disgusting, [...] animals are more estimable," another wrote. Dismay and fascination, suppression and research went hand in hand. The author was granted permission to publish the remarkable photographs of the Sacred Heart congregation's archive. This publication traces the movements of hundreds of thousands of masks, statues, amulets, shields etc. from overseas tribul cultures to and within North Atlantic societies, in colonial and post-colonial times. While the focus is on the Low Countries and their overseas territories, the Belgian Congo and the Netherlands East Indies, related developments in three adjacent colonial powers, Germany, France and the United Kingdom, are also covered, as are links to the United States. The milieus and locales through which tribal objects circulated and circulate are charted, like colonial trading posts, auction houses and museums, and dealers, collectors and curators relate their more recent experiences with objects-in-motion.

Studying Human Origins
This history of human origin studies covers a wide range of disciplines. This important new study analyses a number of key episodes from palaeolithic archaeology, palaeoanthropology, primatology and evolutionary theory in terms of various ideas on how one should go about such reconstructions and what, if any, the uses of such historiographical exercises can be for current research in these disciplines. Their carefully argued point is that studying the history of palaeoanthropological thinking about the past can enhance the quality of current research on human origins. The main issues in the present volume are the uses of disciplinary history in terms of present-day research concerns, the relative weight of cultural and other 'external' contexts, and continuity and change in theoretical perspectives. The book's overall approach is an epistemological one. It does not, in other words, primarily address anthropological data as such, but our ways of handling such data in terms of our most fundamental, but usually quite implicit theoretical presuppositions.
Of Jars and Gongs. Two Keys to Ot Danum Dayak Cosmology
Of Jars and Gongs' deals with the traditional art of Ot Danum Dayak. Much of their art depicts the journey of the soul of the deceased through a richly variegated spirit world. The present publication offers a comparative analysis of various Ot Danum ritual objects. It draws on a long tradition of ethnographic writing on the area stretching back to the mid-19th century, mainly by German and Swiss Protestant missionaries and Dutch colonials. Raymond Corbey is an anthropologist attached to Leiden University, the Netherlands. His research includes the history of dealings with non-Western ritual art by, among others, missionaries, art dealers and museums.
