Electroabsorption Mechanisms in Germanium Quantum Well Material

One possible solution to make viable optoelectronic modulators that meet strict targets down to the scale of on-chip communication is to use germanium-rich materials. Ge/SiGe quantum wells grown on silicon substrates provide the strongest mechanism, the quantum-confined Stark effect (QCSE), and thereby can meet the strictest requirements for optical interconnects, including CMOS-compatibility. Using such a strong effect, Ge-based modulators can be ultra-compact, ultralow-power, large bandwidth and high-speed, making them a strong contender for the future of optoelectronic device integration to solve the bottleneck problem. In this thesis, we will discuss the physical properties of the Ge and...

A secret that changed everything... 'A great big romantic, emotional and involving read' Woman & Home 'With marvellous writing, eccentric characters and a great plot, this has it all' Closer 'This will make you giggle and weep in equal measure' Woman Katie Lavender has always thought she was pretty unshockable, until a year after her mother's death she receives a letter from a solicitor telling her that the man she thought was her father, in fact wasn't. Her real father, a man named Stirling Nightingale, has for years been building a trust fund for her. And now she's of an age to collect it. But Katie's not interested in the money. She wants to know about the man instead. So decides to do some snooping. She tracks him down to a beautiful riverside home on the night he's hosting a birthday party for his ninety-year-old mother. And as she's hovering outside, Katie is mistaken for a replacement waitress - an opportunity just too good to miss. And so Katie discovers that the Nightingales are far from your normal family...But what makes a normal family anyway?

The rights guaranteed in the First Amendment—including freedom of expression—are among the fundamental touchstones of our democracy. In Speaking Freely, Floyd Abrams, who for over thirty years has been our most eloquent and respected advocate for uncensored expression, recounts some of the major cases of his remarkable career—landmark trials and Supreme Court arguments that have involved key First Amendment protections. With adversaries as diverse as Richard Nixon and Wayne Newton and allies as unlikely as Kenneth Starr, Abrams takes readers behind the scenes to explain his strategies, the ramifications of each decision, and its long-term significance, presenting a clear and compelling look at the law in action.
