From the Privileged to the Professionals

This book is concerned with the early years of the Football Association Challenge Cup – more commonly known as the FA Cup – examining events from its inception in 1871–2 to the beginning of the Football League in 1888–9. The work is underpinned by the figurational sociology of Norbert Elias, employing his ideas around the European 'civilising process', power and lengthening chains of human interdependency. The Early Years of the FA Cup

The 150th anniversary of the first FA Cup competition, the earliest knockout tournament in the history of football, will be celebrated during the 2021-2022 season. The first set of matches was played on 11 November 1871, with the Engineers reaching the final played at Kennington Oval on 16 March 1872. They won more than half of them and scored 154 goals. The Army also produced one of the most respected administrators in the history of football, in the form of Major Francis Marindin, who was involved in the founding of the FA ...

This book adds to that debate, providing more information on the early international game. The centrepiece chapter presents an analysis of the reasons for the positive turnaround in fortunes of England's international eleven against Scotland in the late 1880s and early 1890s. How far was this linked to NL Jackson's founding of Corinthian Football Club or did the onset of professionalism in England contribute to this shift in footballing power? Was the initial stor...
