Artists' Painters

Artists' Painters presents international positions of experimental painting from an important private collection. The core of the Cologne-based collection is a comprehensive group of works by the Belgian artist Pierre Alechinsky (*1927). Also represented are Cora Cohen (*1943), Greg Kwiatek (*1948), Ira Bartell (*1954), Gerrit Göllner (*1973), Chris Newman (*1958), Steven Maslin (*1959) and Alice Stepanek (*1954). A separate volume provides an introduction to this remarkable collection as a whole.

The latest volume in the series Our Values, published by the Leopold Hoesch Museum, focuses on a hitherto untold chapter in the collection's history between 1933 and 1955: that of looted art. The focus lies on the close ties to the Wallraf Richartz Museum in Cologne during this period, providing a fascinating insight into the provenance research conducted by both museums, as well as into their complex relationship during the National Socialist and post war eras.

Stephan Balkenhol (b. Fritzlar, Germany, 1957; lives and works in Karlsruhe, Meisenthal/Lorraine, Kassel, and Berlin) is one of the most important German sculptors working today. He started making wood sculptures during his studies with Ulrich Rückriem at the University of Fine Arts of Hamburg (HFBK). Working in the tradition of portrait sculpture, he creates effigies of anonymous and yet strangely familiar men and women. Numerous sculptures by Balkenhol are installed in prominent public settings in London, Paris, Hamburg, Berlin, and other cities. The Canadian artist Jeff Wall (b. Vancouver, BC, 1946; lives and works in Vancouver) is widely regarded as one of the world's leading contempora...

Silke Leverkühne belongs to that generation of artists that with their painting constituted a counterweight to the common conceptual positions in art at the beginning of the 1980s. In 1984 the artist participated in the groundbreaking exhibition curated by Kasper König 'Von hier aus - Zwei Monate neue deutsche Kunst in Düsseldorf' (Starting from here - Two months of new German art in Duesseldorf). The book gives a comprehensive insight into the contemporary oeuvre of Silke Leverkühne and contains an extensive interview with the artist. New works are contrasted with an exemplary selection from earlier series of works and supplemented with sketches and photographs.

The artist Alex Müller (b. Düren, 1971; lives and works in Berlin) devotes herself to painting and sculpture and stages rooms as walkin pictures. Her works transpose organic materials such as apples or opium poppy and objects taken from everyday reality into fantastic, paradoxical, and enigmatic arrangements. In addition to autobiographical sources, the cultural memory of a society defined by media plays a central role as the artist devises these constellations. Inspiration drawn from the television shows of her childhood and youth, her admiration for filmmakers such as Peter Greenaway, and her fascination with mythological and astrological knowledge are of crucial importance in this process. Alex Müller's works accordingly oscillate between identification and secrecy, between the creation of meaning and hermeticism. Includes an essay by Patrizia Dander and a preface by Renate Goldmann.
