Army Life: Up Close and Personal As an active duty and reserve Soldier, as well as Army wife and mother, there were times when I felt like I was cramming six lifetimes into one. These commentaries are about those occasions that produced laughter, adventure, even heartbreak. Some helped me to understand the importance of successfully completing missions while others afforded me opportunities to grow as a person, family member, and friend. Some even led me to spectacular events in life I might never have known. For those that read this book and recognize themselves, it is my prayer they will enjoy reliving all the great times with me. As for the rest of you, whether or not associated with military life, I trust you can relate in some way to these unique Army moments. After all, it could have been you!

These are stories about GIs I witnessed firsthand exhibiting immeasurable expertise, esprit de corps, and camaraderie. As a result, they made an extraordinary impact on their fellow Soldiers as well as a significant difference in the entire U.S. Army.
Operation Vittles
After World War II and before the Korean War, the fi rst battle of the Cold War was fought. Not with machine guns, fi eld artillery, and tanks, but astuteness, wit, courage, and dedication. Although the Berlin Airlift lasted just under a year and is over 60 years old, the fact is this monumental effort by the Americans, British, French, and West Berliners saved a city, West Germany and undoubtedly the rest of Europe from Communism. I trust these stories about their extraordinary accomplishment will entice us all to stop and realize the signifi cance of the Berlin Airlift. I pray this book gives them all the honor and glory they so richly deserve.
Ernie Pyle Was My Hero
Ernie Pyle's writings about Soldiers during World War II were always an inspiration during my career as a feature broadcaster and writer. Full of flavor about "GI" life, I followed Mr. Pyle's example of accompanying Soldiers during training and participating as much as possible. This magic formula never failed to promote understanding and appreciation of the demands and sacrifice of Soldier life. Hearing first hand accounts of the Pearl Harbor attack and the Doolittle Raid that followed; walking along the water's edge at Omaha and Utah Beaches with WWII Soldiers who stormed the shores on June 6, 1944 and accompanying paratroopers to towns like Sainte Mere-Elise where they parachuted in the night before; and exploring other memorable accounts such as prisoners-of war considerably deepened my appreciation and admiration for the "Greatest Generation." Applying the same "Ernie Pyle writing strategy" made all the difference in writing about them.
Remember Pearl Harbor
During a pilgrimage to Ernie Pyle’s grave at Punchbowl Cemetery in Hawaii in June of 2006, the 65th anniversary of the Pearl Harbor attack, I hoped to find material to write about the event that prompted America to enter the Second World War. Mr. Pyle provided the inspiration by leading me to the NISEI- second generation Japanese Americans who fought for America during World War II. Thanks to the Terry Shima, Executive Director of the Japanese Americans Veterans Association, several extraordinary stories evolved about the NISEI Soldiers who founded and served in the 100th Infantry Battalion, 442nd Combat Regimental Team and Military Intelligence Service. These accounts provide a remarkable look back into the NISEI lives following the Pearl Harbor attack. Despite the discrimination, not one of these veterans expressed disgust or hatred for how they were treated afterwards. All I repeatedly heard was the intense desire and opportunity to demonstrate their love and loyalty to the United States. Thank God the chance was given them for they have left a powerful legacy for all Americans.
