Perhaps, after all, the decolonising agenda isn’t extra baggage the church needs to carry on top of everything else. Perhaps, instead, it is the very heart of what the church should be about – disrupting, uncomfortable, and bringing about a kind of ‘holy anarchy’. In Holy Anarchy, Graham Adams points to a realm in which all dynamics of domination, not least in the church, are subverted. It cuts across the loyalties and boundaries of religion and fosters the greatest possible solidarity amongst the different. Urgent and timely, the book weaves together themes around Empire, liberation and decolonial practice with an exploration of the nature and scope of church community, interreligious engagement, mission, and worship.

Christ and the Other

How should we relate to 'others' - those within a particular tradition, those of different traditions, and those who are oppressed? In the light of these anxieties, and building on the work of Andrew Shanks, this book offers a vision of Christ as 'the Shaken One', rooted in community with others. Shaped through dialogue with the theologies of John Hick and Lesslie Newbigin, Adams urges Christian communities to attend more deeply to the demands of ecumenical, dialogical and political theologies, to embody an ever greater 'solidarity of others' - a quality of community better demonstrating Christlike 'other-regard'.

Before and Beyond the 'Big Society'

Before and Beyond the 'Big Society'

John Milbank's theology has shaped much modern political thinking both within and without the Church. In Before and Beyond the 'Big Society', Joseph Forde presents the first study devoted exclusively to John Milbank's theology of welfare, and how it has influenced policy in the Church of England since 2008. By examining the favourable response the Church gave to the 'Big Society' project in 2010-12, Forde shows that Milbank's Blue Socialist fingerprint increasingly dominates. However, this theology has not evolved in a vacuum and Forde expertly places it in its historical and theoretical context. He offers a detailed critical discussion of Milbank's own critique of what has been the mainstream (Temple) Anglican theology of welfare in the Church of England since the 1940s, and a fresh contribution to the assessment of Anglican social theology. Finally, he demonstrates how Milbank's ideas have been furthered by other influential Anglicans. It is this influence that will carry the greatest implications for the Church of England's policy on welfare going forward, making this study relevant to all who care about its contribution to the provision of welfare.

"It is estimated that Billy Graham has preached the Gospel in person to more people than any other preacher in the world's history. Even so, his Crusades present many evangelical ministers with a dilemma. This book explains the dilemma. It examines the effectiveness of the Crusades and the doctrinal content of the preaching, but treats most fully the practice of co-operation with non-evangelicals employed by the Billy Graham Organization."--Page 4 of cover

Based on extensive archival, oral, and relevant secondary sources from Nigeria, the United Kingdom, and the United States, this comprehensive biography tells the story of the Reverend M. D. Opara of eastern Nigeria--an indomitable missionary pioneer, patriot, and nationalist. Ekechi provides a panoramic view of the dynamics of social and political change in the history of Eastern Nigeria and gives special emphasis to Opara's missionary zeal, his fiery political activism, his pioneering initiatives in secondary and teacher training education, and, above all, his pursuit of the democratization of education, which he called "my great work for Africa." This book is part of the African World Series, edited by Toyin Falola, Jacob and Frances Sanger Mossiker Chair in the Humanities, University of Texas at Austin.
