Neo-Latin Drama in Early Modern Europe
From ca. 1300 a new genre developed in European literature, Neo-Latin drama. Building on medieval drama, vernacular theatre and classical drama, it spread around Europe. It was often used as a means to educate young boys in Latin, in acting and in moral issues. Comedies, tragedies and mixed forms were written. The Societas Jesu employed Latin drama in their education and public relations on a large scale. They had borrowed the concept of this drama from the humanist and Protestant gymnasia, and perfected it to a multi media show. However, the genre does not receive the attention that it deserves. In this volume, a historical overview of this genre is given, as well as analyses of separate plays. Réunissant plus de cent trente lettres et fragments de lettres de la correspondance privée et diplomatique de l'humaniste toulousain Jean de Pins, Jan Pendergrass ouvre une perspective unique sur quelque quarante ans d'histoire française et européenne. Humaniste, juriste, diplomate et homme d'Eglise sous les règnes de Louis XII et François Ier, de Pins fit de longues études en France et en Italie du nord avant de devenir, tour à tour, sénateur aux Parlements de Toulouse et Milan, puis ambassadeur français à Venise et à Rome. Consacré évêque de Rieux en 1524, il se démit de ses fonctions parlementaires et finit ses jours à Toulouse, entouré d'étudiants et de gens de lettres épris de littérature classique. Cette édition de sa correspondance révèle l'étendue considérable de ses rapports, non seulement avec les représentants de l'humanisme européen, mais aussi avec les chefs de la diplomatie française, avec des parlementaires, des gens de loi et d'Eglise exceptionnels.
Acta Conventus Neo-Latini Lovaniensis
Every third year, the members of the International Association for Neo-Latin Studies (IANLS) assemble for a week-long conference. Over the years, this event has evolved into the largest single conference in the field of Neo-Latin studies. The papers presented at these conferences offer, then, a general overview of the current status of Neo-Latin research; its current trends, popular topics, and methodologies. In 2022, the members of IANLS gathered for a conference in Leuven where 50 years ago the first of these congresses took place.This volume presents the conference’s papers which were submitted after the event and which have undergone a peer-review process. The papers deal with a broad range of fields, including literature, history, philology, and religious studies.
A Companion to Biblical Humanism and Scholasticism in the Age of Erasmus
Throughout the Middle Ages dialectical disputation was the prevailing method of scholarly inquiry. In the fifteenth century, however, humanists challenged the scholastic method, proposing instead historical and philological approaches. This volume focuses on the polemic over the right approach to biblical studies. It describes manifestations of the controversy, ranging from its beginnings in quattrocento Italy to Germany, Spain, France, the Netherlands, and scholars associated with the papal court in the sixteenth century. Erasmus, the most prominent biblical humanist of his day, served as a lightning rod for many of the controversies discussed here and has also received much attention from modern scholars.
