This volume presents selected papers by the brilliant Uruguayan mathematician Ricardo Mañé, known for his outstanding contributions to dynamical systems and ergodic theory. He was a student of Jacob Palis at IMPA and pursued his whole scientific career at IMPA. Mañé was invited to speak twice in the section of Ordinary Differential Equations and Dynamical Systems, at the International Congress of Mathematics held in Warsaw in 1983 and in Zurich in 1994. He was also a speaker at the Colloquium organized by the Societé Mathématique de France, celebrating R. Thom’s 65 anniversary. In 1994, he became a member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences and was awarded the Third World Academy of Sciences Prize for Mathematics.

Ergodic Theory and Differentiable Dynamics

This version differs from the Portuguese edition only in a few additions and many minor corrections. Naturally, this edition raised the question of whether to use the opportunity to introduce major additions. In a book like this, ending in the heart of a rich research field, there are always further topics that should arguably be included. Subjects like geodesic flows or the role of Hausdorff dimension in con temporary ergodic theory are two of the most tempting gaps to fill. However, I let it stand with practically the same boundaries as the original version, still believing these adequately fulfill its goal of presenting the basic knowledge required to approach the research area of Differe...

The Mathematician's Brain

Examines mathematical ideas and the visionary minds behind them. This book provides an account of celebrated mathematicians and their quirks, oddities, personal tragedies, bad behavior, descents into madness, tragic ends, and the beauty of their mathematical discoveries.

This volume clearly reflects Ricardo Mane's legacy, his contribution to mathematics and the diversity of his mathematical intersts. It contains fifteen refereed research papers on thems including Hamiltonian and Lagrangian dynamics, growth rate of the number of geodesics on a compact manifold, one dimensional complex and real dynamics, and bifurcations and singular cycles. This book also contains two famous sets of notes by Ricardo Mane. One is the seminal paper on Lagrangian dynamics that he had prepared for the conference; the other is on the genericity of zero exponents area preserving diffeomorphisms on surfaces when non Anosov. This book will be of particular interest to researchers and graduate students in mathematics, mechanics and mathematical physics.

Outer Circles

We live in a three-dimensional space; what sort of space is it? Can we build it from simple geometric objects? The answers to such questions have been found in the last 30 years, and Outer Circles describes the basic mathematics needed for those answers as well as making clear the grand design of the subject of hyperbolic manifolds as a whole. The purpose of Outer Circles is to provide an account of the contemporary theory, accessible to those with minimal formal background in topology, hyperbolic geometry, and complex analysis. The text explains what is needed, and provides the expertise to use the primary tools to arrive at a thorough understanding of the big picture. This picture is further filled out by numerous exercises and expositions at the ends of the chapters and is complemented by a profusion of high quality illustrations. There is an extensive bibliography for further study.
