Il volumetto è un omaggio dedicato alla memoria di colui che nel 1974 ha fondato il periodico e lo ha diretto fino al 2007, anno della sua improvvisa scomparsa. Accoglie alcuni testi scritti dagli amici che si raccolgono intorno alla rivista; non c'è un preciso filo conduttore che lega i vari scritti, ma solo il libero flusso dei ricordi. I primi due contributi tratteggiano l'inizio della sua carriera di studioso e la nascita della sua rivista. Accompagnano i testi alcune immagini, di carattere essenzialmente 'privato', tratte dall'archivio della famiglia.

Il volume accoglie gli Atti del Convegno organizzato dall’Università degli Studi di Siena (Siena, Santa Maria della Scala, 15-17 novembre 2007) per ricordare, a pochi mesi della sua prematura scomparsa, la poliedrica figura dello studioso e rimettere insieme le principali tematiche da lui perseguite. Il volume rispecchia la struttura del convegno, divisa in tre sezioni: la prima, dopo una introduzione sulla figura di Riccardo Francovich, è dedicata ai temi propri dell’archeologia medievale italiana da lui più fortemente perseguiti, la seconda è incentrata sul rapporto fra le sue attività di ricerca ed il più ampio dibattito europeo e la terza sulla tutela, la valorizzazione e l’innovazione tecnologica.

The Long Morning of Medieval Europe
Recent advances in research show that the distinctive features of high medieval civilization began developing centuries earlier than previously thought. Villa to Village
Villa to Village challenges the historical view that hilltop villages in Italy were first founded in the tenth century. Drawing upon recent excavations, the authors show that the makings of the medieval village lie in the demise of the Roman villa in late antiquity. The book describes the lively debate between archaeologists and historians on this issue. It also examines the evidence for the first manorial villages of the Carolingian era and describes how these were transformed into the familiar feudal villages that are characteristic of much of Italy. Useful maps, plans and reconstructions illustrate this useful text.
Bounded Wilderness
In Bounded Wilderness, Kathryn Jasper focuses on the innovations undertaken at the hermitage of Fonte Avellana in central Italy during the eleventh century by its prior, Peter Damian (d. 1072). The congregation of Fonte Avellana experimented with reforming practices that led to new ways of managing property and relations among clergy, nobles, and the laity. Jasper charts how Damian's notion of monastic reform took advantage of the surrounding topography and geography to amplify the sensory aspects of ascetic experiences. By focusing on monastic landscapes and land ownership, Jasper demonstrates that reform extended beyond abstract ideas. Rather, reform circulated locally through monastic networks and addressed practical concerns such as property boundaries and rights over water, orchards, pastures, and mills. Putting new sources, both documentary and archaeological, into conversation with monastic charters and Damian's letters, Bounded Wilderness reveals the interrelationship of economic practices, religious traditions, and the natural environment in the idea and implementation of reform.
