Latin Explorations (Routledge Revivals)
Latin Explorations, first published in 1963, offers a fresh approach to Roman poetry from Catullus to Ovid. Traditionally, the period is divided for specialist studies – Lyric, Epic and Elegy. In each of them, techniques of interpretation prevail, isolated from contemporary ideas about poetry and dominated by barriers between ‘textual’, ‘exegetical’ and ‘aesthetic’ criticism. Kenneth Quinn discerns in Roman poetry of this period the adolescence, maturity and decay of a single coherent tradition whose internal unity surpasses differences of form. His argument attempts to reverse the dissociation of purely academic research from appreciative criticism, whilst also incorporating the work of textual scholars. Each chapter is supported by a detailed analysis of the texts: nearly 700 lines of poetry are discussed and translated. Die vorliegende interdisziplinäre Studie untersucht die poetische wie auch die politische Inszenierung der Pfälzischen Hochzeit des Jahres 1613 in London in den occasio-typischen Kommunikationsmedien frühneuzeitlicher Hof- und Populärkultur (Epithalamium, Festbeschreibung, Pamphlet, Predigt etc.) am Hof des schottisch-englischen König Jakob VI. und I. Im Zentrum dieser literatur- und kulturwissenschaftlichen Arbeit steht die Repräsentation des Kurfürsten Friedrich V. von der Pfalz (1596–1632) und seiner Braut Elisabeth Stuart (1596–1662) als Positivikonen eines scheinbar in Aussicht stehenden pan-protestantischen Europa. Im zeitgenössischen Kontext herrschaftslegitimierender Genealogievorstellungen und religiös motivierter politischer Illusionen wird der Ehebund zur Manifestation göttlichen Willens und einer verheißungsvollen Zukunft stilisiert.
Acta Conventus Neo-Latini Monasteriensis
Since 1971, the International Congress for Neo-Latin Studies has been organised every three years in various cities in Europe and North America. In August 2012, Münster in Germany was the venue of the fifteenth Neo-Latin conference, held by the International Association for Neo-Latin Studies. The proceedings of the Münster conference have been collected in this volume under the motto „ Litterae neolatinae, sedes et quasi domicilia rerum religiosarum et politicarum – Religion and Politics in Neo-Latin Literature”. Forty-five individual and five plenary papers spanning the period from the Renaissance to the present offer a variety of themes covering a range of genres such as history, literature, philology, art history, and religion. The contributions will be of relevance not only for scholarly readers, but also for an interested non-professional audience.
