Chaos in Chemistry and Biochemistry

Chaos in Chemistry and Biochemistry

True deterministic chaos is characterized by unpredictable, apparently random motion in a dynamical system completely described by a deterministic dynamic law, usually a nonlinear differential equation, with no stochastic component. The inability to predict future behavior of a chaotic system occurs because trajectories evolving from arbitrarily close initial conditions diverge. Chaos is universal as it may arise in any system governed by one of a class of quite common, suitable nonlinear dynamic laws. This book discusses both the experimental observation and theoretical interpretation of chaos in chemical and biochemical systems. Examples are drawn from the Belousov-Zhabotinsky reaction, surface reactions, electrochemical reactions, enzyme reactions, and periodically perturbed oscillating systems.

Collaborative Intelligence

This practical guide draws on cognitive science and work with Fortune 500 companies to help readers develop essential collaborative skills. Collaborative intelligence is a measure of our ability to think with others on behalf of what matters to us all. It is emerging as a new professional currency at a time when influence is more important than power, and success relies on the ability to inspire. Through a series of practices and strategies, this book helps us develop our own collaborative intelligence. The authors teach us how to value intellectual diversity and recognize our own mind patterns. By mapping the talents of our teams, we’re able to embark together on an aligned course of acti...

Basic Geological Mapping

Designed to be carried in the field, this pocket-sized how-to book is a practical guide to basic techniques in mapping geological structures. In addition to including the latest computerised developments, the author provides succinct information on drawing cross-sections and preparing and presenting 'fair copy' maps and geological diagrams. Contains a brief chapter on the essentials of report writing and discusses how to keep adequate field notebooks. A checklist of equipment needed in the field can be found in the appendices. Quote from 3rd edition "provides a wealth of good advice on how to measure, record and write reports of geological field observations" The Naturalist

Oscillations and Traveling Waves in Chemical Systems

Brings together in one comprehensive volume information on oscillating chemical systems and their experimental behavior. As the first major work in this area, it details their mechanistic interpretation and relationship to theories of oscillatory and related behavior. Topics discussed include: the mathematical aspects of temporal oscillations in reacting systems, chemical oscillators based on iodate ion and hydrogen peroxide, numerical techniques for modeling and analysis oscillating reactions, halogen-based oscillators in a flow reactor, periodically perturbed chemical systems, and the structure and variety of chemical waves.

At the time of his death at the age of 95, Eric Hobsbawm (1917-2012) was the most famous historian in the world. His books were translated into more than fifty languages and he was as well known in Brazil and Italy as he was in Britain and the United States. His writings have had a huge and lasting effect on the practice of history. More than half a century after it appeared, his books remain a staple of university reading lists. He had an extraordinarily long life, with interests covering many countries and many cultures, ranging from poetry to jazz, literature to politics. He experienced life not only as a university teacher but also as a young Communist in the Weimar Republic, a radical s...

Magellan's Cross

The hero of this historical novel is Martin Olden. The story is set against the researched facts of Magellan's voyage to Asia. In 1494 the division of the globe into two spheres of influence, between Portugal and Spain, left a vital question unanswered: which country's sphere encompassed Asia - particularly the fabulously wealthy Spice Islands? In 1519 Captain-General Ferdinand Magellan led a Spanish expedition, sailing westwards, to disprove Portugal's claim to the Spice Islands and establish that much of the rest of Asia were Spain's possessions. The voyage saw a series of dramatic events - by the time Magellan's fleet reached the Magellan Strait, mutinies had left all his Spanish Captains...
