The World is My Classroom

International education and learn-abroad programs have received heightened interest in the knowledge economy, and universities are keen to create successful programs for students. The World Is My Classroom presents diverse perspectives on these experiential learning programs and ways of globalizing Canadian classrooms. Examining themes such as global education, global citizenship, and service learning, it sheds light on current debates that are of concern for faculty members, administrators, international partners, and students alike. The World Is My Classroom is the first book to examine pedagogical questions about the internationalization and globalization of higher education from an explicitly Canadian perspective. It features original reflections from students on their experiences in learn-abroad programs, as well a foreword by Craig and Marc Kielburger, founders of Free the Children and Me to We, on the benefits of international learning experiences. Universities considering developing, enhancing, and refining their learning abroad programs, as well as students considering these programs and experiences, will find this an insightful and useful book.

Europe's Contending Identities

This volume interrogates the implications of the persistence of nationalisms and newer, ethnic-religious identities for the emergence of a robust European identity. The collected essays intersect and are informed by the streams of scholarship on: contemporary ethnonationalism; the challenges associated with immigrant, particularly Muslim immigrant, incorporation; and the so-called new nationalism, including the illiberal ideas and policies promoted by extreme right political parties and groups.

The Culture of Property

  • Categories: Art

What kind of property is art? Is it property at all? Jordanna Bailkin's The Culture of Property offers a new historical response to these questions, examining ownership disputes over art objects and artifacts during the crisis of liberalism in the United Kingdom. From the 1870s to the 1920s, Britons fought over prized objects from ancient gold ornaments dug up in an Irish field to a portrait of the Duchess of Milan at the National Gallery in London. They fought to keep these objects in Britain, to repatriate them to their points of origin, and even to destroy them altogether. Bailkin explores these disputes in order to investigate the vexed status of property within modern British politics a...

This is the first book in the field of workplace discourse to examine the relationships among leadership, ethnicity, and language use. Taking a social constructionist approach to the ways in which leadership is enacted through discourse, Leadership, Discourse, and Ethnicity problematizes the concept of ethnicity and demonstrates the importance of context-particularly the community of practice-in determining what counts as relevant in the analysis of ethnicity. The authors analyse everyday workplace interactions supplemented by interview data to examine the ways in which workplace leaders use language to achieve their transactional and relational goals in contrasting "ethnicized" contexts, two of which are Maori and two European/Pakeha. Their analysis pays special attention to the roles of ethnic values, beliefs and orientations in talk.
