First published in 1988, The Search for the Christian Doctrine of God is still considered by many scholars to be the finest work on the Arian Controversy. Examining scholarly works on the Controversy and many original texts, Professor Hanson, provides a clear understanding of how the traditional and historic doctrine of God as the Holy Trinity reached its most mature and enduring form. The author is not primarily concerned to defend the orthodox position itself, but rather to discover and examine the formation of that orthodoxy. The history of the events - the Councils, the interventions of the Emperor, the rivalries of sees, the behaviour of bishops, the varying fortunes of the different schools of thought and their leaders - is interwoven with the progression of thought and doctrine during the sixty years of the Controversy. Professor Hanson sees the problem of the reconciliation of two concepts which were both part of the very fabric of Christianity - monotheism and the worship of Jesus Christ as divine.

Mystery and Imagination is intended to bridge the dangerous gap between the professional theologian and the ordinary Christian, to meet some of the misapprehensions and criticisms of Christianity current today, and to give positive aid to those who are not afraid to think about their faith. It is theology for those who are disillusioned but not hopeless. Through a lively discussion of some of the main themes of Christian belief--the concept of man, faith, atonement, the incarnation, revelation in history, tragedy--Professor Hanson presents an account of the Christian faith which is constructive without being uncritical. In particular, his book will help those who are groping towards Christian belief, but who find unacceptable the form in which Christianity is conventionally presented. -Publisher

This book does precisely what its title indicates. It discusses and makes as clear as possible what, in the authors' view, the church is, what are its limits, what should be its doctrine, what is the status of its ministry and the nature of its sacraments, and how in the present state of disunion, confusion and uncertainty we can conceive that the church of Jesus Christ exists. In other words, it offers a theology of the church. It is addressed primarily to Anglicans, who have every reason to be confused and uncertain. The fact that we live in a period when ecumenical co-operation and dialogue are being practised as never before in the history of Christianity makes the need for clarity here all the more important. However, it does not deal with the many ethical, social, political and even economic issues and choices which face the church, nor is it a blueprint for the future. Many problems are caused by lack of adequate theological reflection. This book provides primarily that and by focussing on what is called ecclesiology, it will provide clergy and laity alike with a basis on which plans can be made for the future.
