William Penn (1644-1718) founded Pennysylvania in 1682 and governed it with permission from the British crown. He left Pennsylvania in 1701 and returned to England. His son, Thomas (1701/2-1775), came to Pennsylvania in 1732. Thomas' nephew, John Penn (1729-1795) arrived in 1734 and was appointed governor in 1763.
