Travelling the Dutch East Indies
In 1594, the first Dutch ships sailed to ‘the East’. Throughout the seventeenth and eighteenth century, almost five thousand ships were sent to the Dutch East Indies, attracting a growing number of travellers, with trade as one of the major incentives. In addition to Dutch missionary ambitions, progress and technological innovations not only fed the growing hunger for expansion, but also stirred an appetite for adventure. The hope for a life in welfare is mirrored in the growing numbers of passengers travelling ‘East’ in the nineteenth century and the first half of the twentieth century. At the same time, Javanese travellers started to explore their homeland as well. Travelling the Dutch East Indies not only offers a diverse picture of travel and a critical perspective on the colonial ideology with which it is associated, but also shows how the collections of Leiden University Libraries can serve as a rich source for all kinds of historical research.
Illness and Literature in the Low Countries
From as early as classical antiquity there has been an interplay between literature and medicine. The first book of Homer's Ilias recounts the plague that swept the camp of the Achaeans. While this instance concerns a full-length book, it is the aphorism that is of greater importance as a literary technique for the dissemination of medical knowledge, from the "Corpus Hippocraticum" of antiquity until the "Aphorismi de cognoscendis et curandis morbis" (1715) by Herman Boerhaave. In addition, the subject of illness and its impact on mankind was explored by great numbers of poetic scholars and scholarly poets.This collection offers fourteen articles which all highlight the relation between disease and literature. It entails a first-ever overview of Dutch-language research in this field, whereby the literary and cultural functions of medical knowledge and the poetics of medical and literary writing are in the focus.

Celebrity Authorship and Afterlives in English and American Literature
This book maps the history of literary celebrity from the early nineteenth century to the present, paying special attention to the authors’ crafting of their writerly self as well as the afterlife of their public image. Case studies are John Keats, Edgar Allan Poe, Eliza Cook, Herman Melville, Oscar Wilde, Gertrude Stein, J.D. Salinger and Zadie Smith. Literary celebrity is part and parcel of modern literary culture, yet it continues to raise intriguing questions about the nature of authorship, writerly fame and the tension between authorial self-fashioning and public appropriation. Van de Reynaert tot Moeder de Gans, van vrome liederen tot fan fiction en van een los blad perkament tot het boekenbezit van een Leidse student, in Trouw aan de tekst komt bijna alles aan bod dat anno 2024 het beeld van de historische Nederlandse letterkunde bepaalt. Korte artikelen over teksten, methoden en genres laten zien dat de studie van oudere literatuur voortdurend en opnieuw relevant is voor inzicht in processen binnen de cultuurgeschiedenis tot op de dag van vandaag - in samenwerking met allerlei verwante (historische) disciplines. Dit boek bundelt bijdragen van historisch- en modern-letterkundigen, taalkundigen, codicologen, boekwetenschappers en kunsthistorici die allen op eigen wijze trouw aan de tekst zijn en met elkaar de rijkdom van een vak willen tonen aan iedereen die (actieve) interesse heeft voor de praktijk van historische letterkunde en zich daarin wil laten inspireren. Multatuli nu
In 2017 was het honderddertig jaar geleden dat Eduard Douwes Dekker overleed. Maar wat betekent Multatuli voor de huidige tijd? Het laatste deel van zijn Volledige werken is meer dan twintig jaar geleden verschenen en de bekroonde biografie van Dik van der Meulen stamt alweer uit 2002. Toch is het onderzoek naar zijn leven en werk nog altijd in ontwikkeling. Binnen de muren van de neerlandistiek is er aandacht voor hoog en laag, voor centrum en periferie, voor context en literaire theorie. Het is belangrijk dat er telkens vanuit andere invalshoeken en perspectieven naar klassieke auteurs gekeken wordt. Deze bundel is daar een voorbeeld van. Elf wetenschappers, uit Nederland, maar ook uit Duitsland, Engeland en Vlaanderen, laten hun licht schijnen op een nieuw of nog onvoldoende onderzocht perspectief op deze auteur. Zo kunnen oude en nieuwe lezers kennismaken met een kersverse Multatuli.
