Integration Processes and Policies in Europe

In this open access book, experts on integration processes, integration policies, transnationalism, and the migration and development framework provide an academic assessment of the 2011 European Agenda for the Integration of Third-Country Nationals, which calls for integration policies in the EU to involve not only immigrants and their society of settlement, but also actors in their country of origin. Moreover, a heuristic model is developed for the non-normative, analytical study of integration processes and policies based on conceptual, demographic, and historical accounts. The volume addresses three interconnected issues: What does research have to say on (the study of) integration proce...

Migration Policymaking in Europe

Deze studie ontwikkelt een geheel nieuwe benadering van het vraagstuk: Hoe wordt migratie- en integratiebeleid in tien Europese landen gemaakt? Wie is daarbij betrokken?

This open access book explores how research and policymaking in the field of migrant integration have developed historically and how this interrelationship plays out in the strongly politicised climate of opinions on migration in Europe. It features interdisciplinary theoretical contributions as well as original empirical studies on research-policy dialogues at both the EU and country level. The chapters study not only how the dialogue between research and policy is structured (such as advisory bodies, research agencies, and ad-hoc committees), but also how these dialogues affect policymaking and the development of migrant integration research itself as well. The analysis reveals profound ch...

Western Europe and Its Islam

Immigration from North Africa, Asia and elsewhere meant a large influx of Islam into Western Europe. In each country, Muslims organized in various ways and established numerous institutions such as mosques, cemeteries, "halal" butchers, schools, broadcasting organizations, and political parties, and slowly but surely the outlines of Muslim communities begun to emerge. The development of those communities is not a matter of Muslims only, but the product of their interaction with the wider environment. The development of the process of institutionalization is the result of their consultations and conflicts with parties involved, particularly with agents from the host society. As Muslim immigra...

Trade Unions and Migrant Workers

This timely book analyses the relationship between trade unions, immigration and migrant workers across eleven European countries in the period between the 1990s and 2015. It constitutes an extensive update of a previous comparative analysis – published by Rinus Penninx and Judith Roosblad in 2000 – that has become an important reference in the field. The book offers an overview of how trade unions manage issues of inclusion and solidarity in the current economic and political context, characterized by increasing challenges for labour organizations and rising hostility towards migrants.

Communication and Identity in the Diaspora

"If my feet are in Amsterdam, my head and heart are in Turkey." This is the dilemma of the Turkish "guestworkers" in Christine Ogan's fascinating new work on the Netherland's migrant population. Ogan explores the explosive impact the Turkish media has had on this particular diasporic community as they struggle to adapt to life in the West and to redefine their personal and collective identity. Never before have people who lived in adopted lands had such immediate and pervasive access to information and entertainment from their birth countries. Communication and Identity documents how these newly available communication media have enabled migrants to maintain a connection with their ethnic culture, a psychological comfort zone that minimizes estrangement from Turkey, and exacerbates the separation from Dutch public life. Not only a superb case study on how the Netherlands' Turkish community defines itself, this remarkable book's message resonates across the wider European debate currently raging on immigration.

A Question of Balance

Western liberal democracy has a dual foundation of limited government implementing the will of the majority and protecting individual autonomy within a sphere of fundamental rights. Under the rubric of universal human rights Western societies take for granted that they tolerate all religions and treat all persons equally. However, through globalization and immigration Western societies are increasingly finding non-Christian people in their midst. This pluralism is causing polities to rethink fundamental notions of the boundaries of religious freedom, equality, and state neutrality. Three countries whose systems are based on the Western liberal democratic philosophy and which are religiously ...

Work and the Challenges of Belonging

Work and the Challenges of Belonging

This book engages with migrant work in globalizing economies, both in the EU and worldwide, to explore the relationships between work and the complexity of migrant belonging in transnational spaces. Migrant experiences related to global labour market structures are understood in the context of transnational and national policy frames that largely determine the production of migrant work as poorly paid, precarious, and accompanied by low status and inadequate social protection. Special foci include issues of temporality, circularity and precarity; solidarity and belonging; migrants’ strategies for coping with restrictive migration and economic policies; and practices and patterns relating to the commodification of migrant work. The book also discusses some of the analytical and political problems of migration and labour market discourses and practices, particularly in relation to developments around new forms of exclusion, securitization and ethnicization of migrant work. Work and the Challenges of Belonging is cross-disciplinary and comparative, engaging with theoretical, empirical and policy approaches.
